The Corner Scoop – Week 4 Field Hockey Top 10
The headline news of the week comes from the Smyrna Eagles. The Eagles met the Delmar Wildcats who came into the matchup with a 120 game win streak, three Henlopen Conference Titles and seven D2 State Titles. The last time Delmar lost a game was October 22, 2016 to Cape Henlopen, the Cubs and Dodgers were playing to get to the World series (Cubs would go on to win the series for the first time in 108 years, Kyle Schwarber was playing for the Cubs), Clemson was the top NCAA Football team, and “The Closer” by the Chainsmokers was atop the Billboard Music Charts. Although the streak came to an end, it is something to be celebrated and congratulations to Delmar Coach Jodi Hollamon and her teams for their continued success. Make no mistake, the Wildcats are still a force to be reckoned with in high school field hockey.
Week 4 has some teams with equal records facing each other and the ties of the top 10 spots will be broken. After Tuesday, there will be two undefeated teams left in the state. Can anyone keep up the pace of perfection? …..stay tuned!

Division 1 Field Hockey
No. 1 Smyrna 6-0 Smyrna remains in the one spot after defeating the Delmar Wildcats, ending a 120 game win streak. The Eagles are soaring into week 4 with games at Milford Oct. 3 and home vs Caravel Oct. 6.
No. 2 Cape Henlopen 7-1 The Vikings continue to sit behind Smyrna as their only loss is to the Eagles. The game with Indian River was postponed due to poor field conditions and rescheduled for Oct. 13. Upcoming this week for the Vikings is just one game at CR on Oct. 3. A homecoming of sorts for the Windett’s of Cape as Deb coached at CR and Kate played her high school career there.
No. 3 Milford 6-1 The Bucs are playing well but fell to a tough Cape team this week leaving them ranked third again this week. They will have a tough week with Smyrna at home on Tuesday Oct. 3.
No. 4 Charter School of Wilmington 5-2 A team on the move this week jumps two places from last week. The Force picked up two wins this week; a big win over Tatnall and Conrad. They go to Chase Fieldhouse Monday Oct. 2 to square off with Padua.
No. 5 Polytech 5-2 The Panthers are playing strong and will need every effort for back to back road games Sussex County this week against Sussex Central on Tuesday and Delmar on Wednesday.
No. 6 CR 4-2 The Riders found a way to win after dropping two games to Smyrna and Lake Forest. They have a tough week with Cape Henlopen Oct. 3 and Indian River Oct. 5.
No. 7 Middletown 4-2 The Cavs have another slow week with just one game. Their game with Red Lion has been canceled so they will only play St. George’s on Wednesday Oct. 4.
No. 8 Odessa 5-1 The Ducks climb two spots this week and have a three game winning streak going. It’s great to see this young program doing so well in just their 3rd season. The Ducks play Ursuline Oct. 2 and Newark Oct. 5.
No. 9 Sussex Central 3-3 The Golden Knights live in Henlopen North, which is full of good hockey teams. 5 of their opponents occupy this top ten. Central has one tough matchup against Polytech this week Oct. 3.
No. 10 Appoquinimink and St. George’s Vo-Tech entered the rankings and shared the ten spot. Both teams have records of 3-3 and are in the Blue Hen Flight A. I will keep my eye on these two this week.
Division 2 Field Hockey
No 1. Delmar 6-1 The Wildcats remain on top this week, despite a loss to Smyrna. They bounced right back with a 4-0 victory over Lake Forest. Their stamina will be tested with three back to back games this week Tuesday Oct. 3 at Woodbridge, Wednesday Oct. 4 home vs. Polytech, and Thursday Oct. 5 home vs. Kent Island (MD).
No 2/No3. Newark Charter 7-0 and Caravel 8-0 . The two and three ranking will be decided Tuesday night Oct. 3 when these two undefeated teams face off. The game will be at Caravel under the lights and will be the Game of the Week. Caraval has a tough week with Newark Charter Oct. 3 and Friday Oct. 6 at Smyrna. Newark Charter vs Caravel Tuesday night and then St. Elizabeth’s on Friday Oct. 6 at the Chase Fieldhouse.
No 4. St. Mark’s 6-1 The Spartans move up a spot and are on a five game winning streak. They will face Concord Oct. 4 and St. George’s Oct. 6.
No.5 Indian River 5-1 The Indians are on a three game win streak but are on the road all week Oct. 3 at Sussex Academy and Oct. 5 at CR. It will be interesting to see how they fare this week.
No 6 Concord 4-2 The Raiders have been a little inconsistent so far this season. They play three games this week and it will be interesting to see how they fare. They go to St. George’s Monday Oct. 2, to St. Mark’s Wednesday Oct. 4 and will come home Friday Oct. 6 against Dicknson.
No.7 Tatnall 4-2 The Hornets have played inconsistently so far but have an interesting run coming up which puts them in the seven spot with the chance of advancing in the top ten in the coming weeks. This week they face Sanford on Oct. 5. Keep an eye on this team as we head into the second half of the season.
No 8. Wilmington Friends 4-2 The Quakers take the spot away from Tower Hill this week. I like the look of their schedule from here on out as they will see others in the top 10, hoping they can make a run to the tournament.
No 9./No. 10 Lake Forest 4-3 and Sussex Academy 4-3. Both of these teams need to find some traction if they are going to put their stamp on this 2023 season. They will see each other but not for another week. Lake Forest travels to Seaford Oct. 3 and comes home to face Sussex Tech Oct. 5. Sussex Academy will be tested and has a tough road ahead of them with strength of schedule, but can they win some of those games to stay in the mix? The Seahawks will just have one game this week against Indian River Oct. 3.
