State Police Arrest Man for Felony Shoplifting

Delaware State Police have arrested Steven Cornish, 34, of Seaford, Delaware for multiple shopliftings that occurred at a Dover Walmart on Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday, August 5, 2023, at approximately 10:47 a.m., a trooper was dispatched to Walmart at 36 Jerome Drive in Dover for a report of a felony shoplifting that occurred on Friday morning. The investigation revealed an unknown black male damaged a locked drawer by prying it open and stole two iPhone 14s. On August 5, 2023, at approximately 4:18 p.m., troopers and Cheswold Police Department responded to Walmart for a shoplifting in progress by the same suspect and two accomplices. The business reported the suspect was attempting to pry open a locked drawer while the two accomplices distracted employees. The suspect was unable to open the drawer and exited the business with a stolen pry bar. Upon leaving, the suspect was taken into custody by a Cheswold officer. The suspect initially provided a false name, but was later identified as Steven Cornish. The two accomplices, Carolyn Carey, 35, and Darryl Blackwell, 33, both of Dover, Delaware, were also taken into custody at the scene and released with a criminal summons for Conspiracy Third Degree.

Cornish was taken to Troop 9 and charged with the following crimes:

  • Shoplifting Over $1,500 (Felony)
  • Criminal Mischief (Felony)
  • Shoplifting Under $1,500
  • Criminal Impersonation
  • Conspiracy Third Degree

Cornish was arraigned by the Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $3,500 cash bond.
