This week is exciting for high school field hockey as they take to the fast astroturf at Rullo Stadium at the University of Delaware for the Turf Bowl. I don’t expect the top teams in either division to change much in the next two weeks of regular season play. But there are teams that still have six or seven games left to play and could change the landscape of who finds their way into the tournament brackets. Milford is the surprise team of the season and continues to play well. St. George’s had a tough week and will drop out this week and I welcome newcomers the top 10 William Penn and Delcastle in D1. D2 sees DMA join the top 10 again, but Lake Forest drops out. The No.10 spot has been tough to fill consistently in D2 all season and counting the preseason picks seven teams have occupied that position.

Division 1 Field Hockey
No. 1 Smyrna 10-0 The Eagles didn’t disappoint this week and picked up 2 more wins. Goalkeeper Hallie Geiger is committed to play next year at Drexel and has only given up 4 goals and has 34 saves. Watch the Eagles this week on Oct. 17 at Tatnall, Oct. 19 at home vs. Indian River and in the Turf Bowl at University of Delaware Sunday, Oct. 22 against Padua.
No. 2 Cape Henlopen 11-1 Cape will finish out their regular season with home games, always an advantage when you play on turf. The Vikings will play in the Game of the Week when they host D2 powerhouse Delmar Thursday night, Oct. 19, in Champions Stadium. Tune in and watch this one live on Delaware Live-302 Sports.
No. 3 Milford 8-2 The Bucs picked up a BIG win in overtime this week in the game of the week against St. Mark’s. What a show these athletes put on for their teachers on Teacher Appreciation Day. They face Indian River away, under the lights Tuesday Oct. 17, Seaford at home Oct. 19, and Laurel at UD in the Turf Bowl at 5:30 SaturdayOct. 21.
No. 4 MIddletown 8-2 Head Coach Stefany Krygier has her Cavaliers on the move! It’s been almost a month since they lost a game and this week will be important for their tournament seeding. They are home Tuesday Oct. 17 vs CR, at Conrad Oct. 19 for their Pink Out Game, and home Friday Oct. 20 vs Polytech.
No. 5 Charter School of Wilmington 7-2 The Force is a team with a lot of games left on the schedule. They play three tough matchups this week, let’s see if they can hold onto their spot here in the top 10.They play Oct. 17 at St. Mark’s,Oct. 19 at home vs.Newark Charter and Saturday Oct. 21 at 1 pm in the Turf Bowl vs Archmere Academy.
No. 6 Polytech 8-3 The Panthers season has been inconsistent. They win and lose games alternately and can’t seem to get a win streak going. 3 of their next 4 games are against top teams in this division so they have their work cut out for them. This week Oct. 17 home vs. Lake Forest and Oct. 20 at Middletown.
No. 7 Odessa 8-2 I can’t say enough good things about Odessa this season. Head Coach Maria Collier and her roster of 19 Ducks are making a name for themselves. They have a busy week with DOver at home Oct. 16, Sister school Appo at home Oct.18 for Senior Night @ 7 pm, and Friday night they play Delcaslte at 8 pm at UD for the Turf Bowl.
No. 8 Appoquinimink 6-5 The Jags will see their other sister school, Odessa Oct. 18 and play St. George’s Friday night at 6:30 pm in the Turf Bowl at UD. They need to rebound from a loss to MIddletown as these next two weeks are all about getting the best seed possible for the tournament.
No. 9 Caesar Rodney 5-5 The Riders have a tough week ahead of them with three games against very successful opponents. Oct. 16 home vs. Delmar, Oct. 17 at Middletown, Oct. 19 back home vs. Laurel.
No. 10 William Penn 4-4/Delcastle 5-4 Both teams in the Blue Hen Conference, Flight A are breaking into the top 10. William Penn won the head to head contest with Delcastle but their records have them vying for the ten spot. This week will determine who stays and who goes.
Division 2 Field Hockey
No 1. Delmar 10-1 The Wildcats had an emotional and devastating week and our hearts go out to the entire Delmar community after losing student-athlete Carter Figgs in an automobile crash last weekend. Head Coach Jodi Holloman gathered her team to pick up a win over Dover to stay atop the ranks in D2 hockey. They will see CR Oct.16 and play the Game of the Week at Cape Henlopen’s Champions Stadium, 6 pm Thursday Oct. 19. Watch this game live on Delaware Live-302 Sports.
No 2. Caravel 10-1 The Bucs continue to impress this season. Defensively they are top notch, offensively they have to find the cage more often as they move to tourney time. Tuesday night Oct. 17 they face Sussex Central 6:15 pm, Oct. 18 they travel to Perryville (MD), and Sunday at 12:30 they play Episcopal Academy (PA) at UD in the turf bowl.
No 3. Newark Charter 10-1 The Patriots rebounded nicely after losing to Caravel by picking up three wins. Oct. 16 at Sussex Academy, 10/19 at Charter School of Wilmington, and Sunday at 5:00 pm vs Tatnall at UD in the Turf Bowl.
No 4. St. Mark’s 9-2 The Spartans lost a tough one against Milford last week in overtime. They play twice this week and have the opportunity to bounce back.Oct. 17 home vs. Charter School of Wilmington, and Saturday at 11:30 vs. Delmarva Christina at UD in the Turf Bowl.
No.5 Wilmington Friends 8-3 Friends jumped up a spot this week after going 2-1 in their last three games. This week they face Ursuline Oct. 18, and William Penn Oct. 21.
No 6 Indian River 7-4 The Indians have done well this season so far, but have a tough week with two Henlopen North teams in Milford Oct. 17 @ IR 6 pm, and Smyrna Oct. 19 on the road.
No.7 Sussex Academy 6-4 The Seahawks only losses are to heavy hitters Smyrna, Delmar, Cape Henlopen, and Milford. They play three games this week and need to stay in the mix headed to tourney time. Oct. 16 home vs. Newark Charter, Oct. 19 at Dover, and Saturday Oct. 21 at 7 pm vs Woodbridge at UD in the Turf Bowl.
No 8. DMA 6-4 The SeaHawks jumped back into the top ten this week after winning games when others couldn’t. They see action twice this week Oct. 18 at home vs. Hodgson Vo-Tech and then Sunday Oct. 22 at 3:30 vs Conrad at UD in the Turf Bowl.
No 9 Tower Hill 6-4 The Hillers have two games this week. Oct. 19 vs Sanford at home for their Pink Out Game and Oct. 21 at Tatnall. They have just been missing the consistency this season of stringing wins together but should stay in the mix in D2.
No. 10 Tatnall 4-3 The Hornets have a LOT of season left with 7 games still on the schedule, more than any other team in the top ten. Four of those seven will be played this week and will test their stamina. On Oct. 17 they host Smyrna, Oct. 19 they go to St. Andrews, 10/21 they host Tower Hill and turn right around and play Sunday,Oct. 22, 5 pm vs Newark Charter at UD in the Turf Bowl.
