Delaware State Police is investigating a pedestrian accident that resulted in a fatality this morning at Newark.
A 2020 white Jeep Grand Cherokee, traveling westbound in the left lane, approached Biddle Avenue at 5:07 am on July 4, 2025. A pedestrian whose vehicle had broken down on the right shoulder was also trying to cross westbound lanes. As the pedestrian attempted to cross a dark road, he entered the Jeep’s travel path. He was then struck.
The pedestrian was an 89 year old man from New Castle in Delaware. He was transported to a local hospital where he was declared dead. The name of the pedestrian is being kept secret until his family members are informed.
The Jeep driver, a 30-year old man from Bear in Delaware, and his 26-year-old passenger were uninjured.
The road was closed for approximately four hours to investigate and clear the scene.
