    Sussex Central visits Dover Football  Friday 10/15  7PM  LINK    Sussex Central travels up to Dover for a 3A matchup Friday night. Central comes into this game with a 3-2 record. Last week they defeated Milford from 2A 31-7 in their homecoming game. Their other two wins have come over William Penn & Hodgson. Their losses came at the hands of Salesianum & Smyrna. Dover is 4-2 under new head coach Chip Knapp, formerly Wesley football head coach. Before last week’s loss at Appoquinimink Dover had won 4 straight games which included a big win over ST George’s. They will look to get back in the win column Friday night which happens to be their homecoming game. Last year Central defeated Dover 34-0.    Caravel visits Woodbridge Football  Friday 10/15  7PM  LINK Another battle of the unbeatens in this 2A battle. Caravel is 4-0 on the season with wins over Glasgow, Sussex Tech, Red Lion and Concord. All good wins, but none of their opponents have a winning record. Woodbridge will be their first true test of the season. Woodbridge is 5-0 and has played a few strong teams in St Marks and 1A Laurel. Woodbridge will face its second undefeated opponent in back to back weeks. Woodbridge defeated Caravel 26-7 last season.    Howard visits Delaware Military Academy (DMA) Football Friday 10/15 7PM LINK This matchup of two 2A top 5 ranked teams is our game of the week sponsored by First State Orthopedics. Howard will visit an undefeated DMA team. Howard 4-1 suffered its only loss to #1 ranked 2A Archmere back in week 3. Since then they have won 2 straight. DMA is undefeated at 5-0 and hasn’t had a real test yet. They have dominated all their opponents thus far. However none of their opponents have a winning record. This will be their first true test this season.  Tower Hill visit Tatnall Volleyball Thursday 10/14 4PM LINK Tower Hill travels over to Barley Mill Road to face Independent conference rival Tatnall. Tower Hill swept Tatnall earlier in the season at home 3-0. Tower Hill has gone 4-2 since that match. Tatnall has been up and down since that match. They lost 3 straight after that match, but turned it around with 3 straight wins.  Newark Charter visit Padua Volleyball Friday 10/15 7:15PM LINK A 9-1 Newark Charter visits a 7-2 Padua team. Newark Charter will host a good DMA team today so they could better their record before their match with Padua. However both teams have losses to #1 St Marks. Padua won 4 straight matches after their loss to St Marks, before taking their second loss on the season to Wilmington Charter. They have since returned to the win column with a win over Caravel. This will be a big matchup of two ranked teams.   • Life and legacy of Pete du Pont to be celebrated Friday

The public event, promoted as a celebration of du Pont’s life and legacy, will begin at 2 p.m. at The Playhouse on Rodney Square. A reception will follow from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Gold Ballroom of the Hotel du Pont. While it’s too late to register to attend the memorial in person, a virtual option is available at this link. The eulogy will be delivered by columnist, author and commentator George Will. Other speakers will include Gov. John Carney, Rev. Ruth Beresford and members of du Pont’s family. “It is hard to say goodbye to a remarkable man,” said Glenn Kenton, du Pont’s former secretary of state, in a press release. “He served his state and his country in countless ways. He left Delaware a better place than he found it. He fostered expansive growth and changed laws and systems that created a legacy in this state that continues to this day.” du Pont was a lifelong Republican who served as a state legislator, member of Congress, presidential candidate, commentator and columnist. He served as governor from 1977 to 1985. He advocated for less government regulation and policies that expanded the economy and believed decisions should be made at businesses or homes, not by government. During his term in office,  JP Morgan Chase, Citicorp and MBNA were among the banks that came to Delaware, bringing thousands of financial service jobs. In turn, their contributions strengthened the real estate market, as well as community and nonprofit organizations. His 1988 Republican presidential nomination employed a “Damn Right” motto that colored political debate for the next two decades. After he left politics, he was a commentator on television, radio and in print media, pushing for the same issues he championed in office. Will is a libertarian-conservative political commentator and author. He writes for The Washington Post and appears on NBC News and MSNBC. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1977.   • Faithful Friends: 50% more pets saved in 4 years with new HQ
    Faithful Friends Animal Society unveiled its new headquarters Thursday.

    Faithful Friends Animal Society is hoping to have the capacity to save 25% more animals in the next two years with its new headquarters, its founder said after a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday. “When we started Faithful Friends [in 2000], publicly-funded shelters in Delaware had a 90 percent kill rate, and today, Delaware is one of just three no-kill states in the country,” said Jane Pierantozzi, founder and executive director of the animal welfare nonprofit. The organization moved from its previous location at 12 Germay Drive in Wilmington to 165 Airport Road in New Castle. “We have space for about 65 dogs and about 200 cats and kittens, plus our foster care system which we support is another 300 animals,” Pierantozzi said. “ We hope that the lifesaving will increase by 25% in two years because of the new location… and hopefully a 50% increase in four years.” Based on the current numbers of animals being helped by the shelter, Faithful Friends wants to expand its services to about 140 more animals in the next two years and 280 more in the next four. One challenge the shelter is facing, she said, is a slowdown in dog adoptions across the country, which she says is largely because of the struggling economy. The shelter has an annual operating budget of $3.9 million.  “We rely on individual donors mainly for running this facility,” Pierantozzi said.  Construction on the new $11 million facility began in May 2017 and was supposed to be done in 2021, but delays were inevitable with the pandemic. Through the legislature’s Bond Bill, the shelter received about $1.4 million from the state over a few separate allocations for the new headquarters.  During the ceremony, three pet-owners who adopted from Faithful Friends shared their stories on the importance of saving animals and how their pets have become an integral part of their families.  One was a police officer, Rick Jones, in Pennsylvania who trained his adopted dog to become a certified police dog. He said his dog Jack is the first rescue police K-9 in Pennsylvania, and he predicted that more rescue dogs will become members of the police force. “Pets are essential to human mental health and sometimes physical health,” said New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer, who is running for governor next year. “This piece of land makes a tremendous statement about the values of our community.” Among a slew of gratitude for individual and group donors, construction workers, designers and more, Board President Bob Wasserbach thanked Colonial School District for gifting the land to the shelter. Some of what Faithful Friends has done since its inception to protect animals in Delaware include:  Working with state officials on Delaware’s first spay/neuter legislation, which created a public spay/neuter fund for pet owners on public assistance and required all shelters to spay/neuter pets before adoption. Opening Delaware’s first free pet food and supply bank, which became a model for other organizations throughout the state. Leading the creation of Delaware’s Animal Shelter Standards Law, which overhauled how shelters manage animals that are in their care and required shelters to publish their animal outcomes. Pushing for Delaware’s animal welfare services to be considered a supportive state agency, leading to the creation of the Office of Animal Welfare under the Department of Health and Human Services. Calling for an increased registration fee for manufacturers on the sale of pet food in Delaware, which created significant support for the state’s spay/neuter fund. Animal shelters in Delaware aren’t allowed to euthanize healthy or treatable animals based on time limits or capacity of the shelter. They are only allowed to euthanize terminally-ill animals, animals suffering poor quality of life or those considered dangerous to public safety. Pierantozzi said the first goal of Faithful Friends was to end the mass killing and mistreatment of pets in publicly-funded shelters. “Moving in the new facility tells the community two things,” she said. “One, we are here to stay. Two, we have passionate supporters who give us a firm foundation from which to grow.”

  • Delaware joins nationwide task force to cut down on scam calls

    Even in a time of stark political division, there is thing almost everybody can agree on: scam calls suck. In that vein, Delaware has joined a nationwide task force to cut down on illegal robocalls. Comprised of 50 attorneys general from across the United States, the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force will investigate and take legal action against the telecommunications companies responsible for bringing foreign robocalls into the country, Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings announced Tuesday. “Robocalls are a nationwide problem that Delawareans — including me — deal with every day,” Jennings said in a press release. “The nature of these scams makes it nigh-impossible for any one state to singlehandedly stop robocalls; but this task force combines our resources and focuses them on the bad actors in the telecom industry who enable this scourge.” The task force has issued 20 civil investigative demands to 20 gateway providers and other entities that are allegedly responsible for a majority of foreign robocall traffic. Gateway providers that bring foreign traffic into the U.S. telephone network have a responsibility to ensure the traffic is legal, but according to Jennings, these providers are not taking sufficient action to stop robocall traffic. “In many cases, they appear to be intentionally turning a blind eye in return for steady revenue,” the press release said. “The Task Force will focus on the bad actors throughout the telecommunications industry to help reduce the number of robocalls that consumers receive and benefit the companies that are following the rules.” According to the National Consumer Law Center and Electronic Privacy Information Center, over 33 million scam robocalls are made to Americans every day. These scam calls include Social Security Administration fraud against seniors, Amazon scams against consumers, and many other scams targeting all consumers, including some of our most vulnerable citizens. An estimated $29.8 billion dollars was stolen through scam calls in 2021. Most of this scam robocall traffic originates overseas. The Task Force is focused on shutting down the providers that profit from this illegal scam traffic and refuse to take steps to otherwise mitigate these scam calls. To avoid scam calls: · Be wary of callers who specifically ask you to pay by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency. For example, the Internal Revenue Service does not accept iTunes gift cards. · Look out for prerecorded calls from imposters posing as government agencies. Typically, the Social Security Administration does not make phone calls to individuals. · If you suspect fraudulent activity, immediately hang up and do not provide any personal information. · Contact the DOJ’s Consumer Protection Division at (800) 220-5424 or e-mail [email protected] “We will take this fight to anyone who helps these scammers and robocallers,” Jennings said.

  • McGuiness Trial: DOJ investigator says he got ‘twisted up’

    State Auditor Kathleen McGuiness’ defense attorney on Monday grilled a Department of Justice investigator who admitted to making multiple false statements under oath.  Franklin Robinson, chief investigator of the Justice Department’s Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust, said he got “twisted up” when he admitted during an April suppression hearing that a search warrant for McGuiness’ office included false statements. Robinson said Monday his statements were “false, but not intentionally false.” The search warrant — which Robinson swore was accurate before he asked a judge to sign it — claimed that consulting firm My Campaign Group received multiple payments in August and Sept. 2020.  The warrant alleged those payments were divided so each would remain beneath a $5,000 threshold. Above that threshold, the Division of Accounting is required to review and authorize expenditures. Contrary to what the warrant said — and what Robinson told the first grand jury to indict McGuiness — the payments were not divided.  Individual payments in August and Sept. 2020 were drawn from two different budget lines: A general fund and a COVID-19 relief fund for qualifying expenditures.  Both were deposited into the consultant’s bank account as single payments. Both were reviewed and approved by the Division of Accounting. Robinson had documents in his possession before signing the search warrant that showed the statements about splitting payments were false. Jane Cole, director of the Division of Accounting, gave Robinson a spreadsheet highlighting the payments in question and indicating they had been approved. Robinson said while he signed the warrant, he didn’t write it. A team of investigators and lawyers wrote it and emailed it around for edits, he said, and he had no reason to doubt its accuracy. “You’re telling me that your investigative team — multiple lawyers in the Attorney General’s office and yourself, completely ignored this document,” Defense attorney Steve Wood asked. “I can’t speak to the thought process of what was involved with putting that paragraph,” Robinson said. Robinson said the idea that McGuiness was intentionally dividing payments to circumvent state procurement code was “a working theory” at the time. Lead prosecutor Mark Denney asked Robinson if he has a track record of making false statements under oath. “In all of the cases you’ve handled as a New Castle County police officer, during your time with special investigations into Medicaid fraud, and in the Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust, have you ever been accused of dishonesty,” Denney asked. “No, only this one,” Robinson said. McGuiness is defending herself against multiple felony and misdemeanor charges alleging conflict of interest, felony theft, non-compliance with procurement law, official misconduct and felony witness intimidation. She’s accused of arranging public payments to a campaign consultant to avoid regulator scrutiny, hiring her daughter whose salary was deposited into a jointly-owned bank account and attempting to intimidate employees who might help investigators looking into her conduct. Earlier Monday, prosecutors called Dawn Haw-Young, the office’s former chief administrative auditor, Laura Horsey, a former staff auditor and Matt Zolper, a former deputy auditor. Haw-Young said she reported McGuiness to the state’s Public Integrity Commission when she learned McGuiness had hired her daughter as a summer intern. Wood said that’s not a crime.  She said she sought legal counsel after being given a performance improvement plan with which she disagreed. Zolper, who was only on the stand for about five minutes, said McGuiness ordered him to draft Haw-Young’s performance improvement plan. Horsey described a time she was reprimanded after voicing an opinion in a meeting with another agency that was at odds with McGuiness’ objectives. Trial of State Auditor Kathy McGuiness If found guilty, McGuiness faces between zero and 13 years in prison. Monday marks the eighth day of the trial. Prosecutors say they plan to rest their case Tuesday afternoon. Wood plans to ask Judge William Carpenter to issue a judgment of acquittal on all five counts after the state rests. Carpenter could refuse the request. He could issue a blanket judgment on the spot, effectively bringing the trial to an end. He could acquit McGuiness on some charges or not others. Finally, he could reserve his decision until the end of the trial and only issue judgments of acquittal if the jury does not. How long the defense’s case will take depends on Carpenter’s decision. If Carpenter wipes out some of the charges, the defense won’t have as many witnesses to call. If Wood has to argue all five counts, he anticipates he’ll rest his case Thursday. Carpenter has said he’d like to wrap the case up before the long Independence Day weekend. The trial marks the first time in Delaware history that a statewide-elected official has stood trial while in office.
