Friday’s weather was as miserable as predicted, with strong winds, coastal flooding, a warning of flash floods and multiple roads closed or impassible.

The flooding forced the evacuation of Woodland Beach in Kent County and closed part of Route 1 in Sussex County and other roads throughout the state, the Delaware Department of Transportation reported on Friday evening.

Flooding made more roads closed or impassable in eastern Sussex County, Delaware State Police said Friday, including Route 1/Coastal Highway between John J. Williams Highway, Rehoboth, and Garfield Parkway, Bethany. Also closed: Long Neck Road south of Cove Road, Millsboro;  Camp Arrowhead Road south of John J. Williams Highway, Lewes; and Cedar Branch Road between Mills Road and Drawbridge Road, Milford.

“The flooding will be notable both for its unusual intensity and particularly long duration, with concern lasting through at least Sunday morning before the elevated waters at last recede,” The Washington Post reported.

“The storm could even bring the highest water levels observed in Delaware Bay, beating out any flood events tied to past hurricanes or winter storms,” it continued.

“The National Weather Service is forecasting water levels on Delaware Bay at Reedy Point to crest at 9.5 feet Friday evening, corresponding to major flood stage.” The post published a striking tweet from meteorologist Bill Karins.
