WILMINGTON – The Wilmington & Western Railroad, a historic landmark dedicated to preserving the legacy of rail travel in northern Delaware, has announced that it will temporarily pause operations for the 2025 season to conduct maintenance and repairs.
For over 60 years, the Wilmington & Western Railroad has served as a beloved attraction, offering passengers a glimpse into the rich history of the Red Clay Valley. The nonprofit organization, operated by dedicated volunteers and staff, has worked to maintain and interpret the cultural and railroad heritage of the region.
In a statement on their website and social media pages, the organization expressed gratitude to its supporters and emphasized the necessity of this decision.
“While our historic trains have stood the test of time, it’s crucial that we focus on restoring and maintaining them for the future,” the statement read.
The temporary suspension is part of a proactive effort to ensure the long-term viability of the railroad. Although no exact reopening date has been announced, the organization reassured the public that efforts are underway to return the railroad to service stronger than ever.
Supporters of the Wilmington & Western Railroad are encouraged to stay connected for updates on restoration progress and future reopening plans.
“Your ongoing support means the world to us as we take these important steps toward preserving the Wilmington & Western Railroad’s legacy for generations to come,” the statement concluded.
