WILMINGTON — City officials, community leaders, and residents came together Tuesday morning to celebrate Pride Month with a ceremonial proclamation and the unveiling of a rainbow crosswalk at 6th and Union Streets.
The event began with remarks from Mayor John Carney at Crimson Moon, a local LGBTQIA+-affirming business. Speaking to attendees, Carney reflected on the city’s commitment to inclusion and equality.
“This is not just paint on pavement — it’s a statement,” said Mayor Carney. “This crosswalk is a symbol of visibility and belonging. It reflects our promise that Wilmington is a place where everyone, regardless of who they are or who they love, should feel safe, seen, and supported.”
Carney then signed the official Pride Month Proclamation, which acknowledges the contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals to the Wilmington community and commemorates the historic legacy of the Stonewall Uprising. The proclamation also encourages participation in Pride events that promote LGBTQIA+ culture and rights.

“This crosswalk serves as an ongoing reminder that the values of equity and respect are not confined to one month,” he said. “They are the foundation of the city we are working to build every day.”
After the signing, the mayor joined At-Large City Council Members Latisha Bracy and James Spadola, members of the Department of Public Works, and LGBTQIA+ advocates in painting the rainbow crosswalk.
