WILMINGTON – The city’s law enforcement community is expanding, and both Mayor John Carney and Police Chief Wilfredo Campos are calling on individuals interested in a career in law enforcement to apply for the upcoming 105th Wilmington Police Academy. The application period is open from now until May 23.
The Wilmington Police Department (WPD) is preparing for the arrival of new recruits this September. With a starting salary of $67k, the WPD is offering competitive compensation for those looking to join the force.
“We are proud of the work our Wilmington Police officers do every day to make our City a better place to live, work, and play,” said Mayor Carney. “I join Chief Campos and his team in encouraging you to apply to join the latest class and to become part of this accredited law enforcement agency.”

As of now, the WPD operates with an authorized strength of 305 officers, but attrition has led to a staffing level below 95% of this target. This shortfall has prompted the need for a new academy class. The exact number of recruits who will be accepted into the 105th Academy will be confirmed as the start date nears.
“Every day, our dedicated officers use proven crime reduction strategies and the latest technologies to protect and serve Delaware’s largest city,” said Chief Campos. “We invite you to join us in this important mission to support our neighborhoods and enhance safety and quality of life throughout Wilmington.”

The Wilmington Police Department’s recruitment efforts are ongoing. Year-round, members of the WPD Human Resources Division and Recruitment Team attend career fairs, visit high schools and colleges, and engage with community groups to encourage individuals to consider a career in law enforcement. The department is also reaching out to those who previously expressed interest in joining the force.
“Our police officers receive exceptional training and preparation for successful careers in law enforcement and public service through the Wilmington Police Academy, and have access to opportunities for professional development and growth throughout their careers with our agency,” Chief Campos added. “I invite anyone interested in a career in law enforcement to consider applying, and hope you will be part of our team.”
Interested applicants can learn more about the process and submit applications by visiting the WPD recruitment webpage at www.WilmingtonDE.gov/PoliceAcademy. The application process includes a written exam, a physical ability test, and interviews, including a session with the Chief of Police.
