WILMINGTON — Mayor John Carney and the Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services announced a summer initiative to distribute free electric fans to eligible seniors.
Fans will be available on a first-come, first-served basis every Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services on the 7th floor of the Louis L. Redding City/County Building, located at 800 N. French Street.
Due to early heat waves, an initial distribution day will take place on Friday, June 6.
To qualify, individuals must be 65 years or older, live within Wilmington city limits, present a valid state-issued ID showing age and address, and not have received a fan from the City earlier in 2024.
City officials emphasized that fans can be helpful in mild to moderate temperatures but warned that they should not be used when the outdoor heat exceeds 95°F, as they may provide a false sense of relief and pose health risks.
The fan distribution program is part of Wilmington’s broader efforts to support vulnerable residents during the summer months.
