Grotto Pizza has joined a national effort to incentivize vaccinations by rewarding all staff who demonstrate proof of vaccination prior to June 30 with a $25 American Express gift card.

The Rehoboth Beach-based company employs more than 1,800 people during the peak summer season.

“As a company with locations across three states with a customer geography base that travels over 200 miles to visit us in the summertime, we feel it’s our social responsibility to invest in incentivizing our staff to get the COVID-19 shot,” Jeff Gosnear, vice president, said in a statement Thursday.

“We’re preparing our team for what we hope is a busy summer season and we’re proud to play a role in curbing the spread of the virus so that we can all resume our favorite pastimes- especially dining at Grotto Pizza.”

Companies across the country are offering incentives. AARP last month listed a dozen, with the most common incentive being two hours of pay for each shot. Sometimes, the cost of a Lyft was included.

Organizations with Delaware workers on that list include Aldi, Amtrak, Darden Restaurants (such as Olive Garden), Dollar General, Instacart, Lidl, McDonald’s, Target and Trader Joe’s.

And Ohio on Wednesday dangled $1 million prizes for vaccinations.

“Gov. Mike DeWine announced five, weekly drawings of $1 million open to residents who’ve received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine,” NPR reported.

“A similar lottery for teenagers will provide the lucky names with a full, four-year scholarship to a public university in Ohio – room and board included.”

Rowan University in South Jersey is also going for incentives. “Full-time students who show proof of vaccination before July 31, 2021, will receive a $500 credit to their fall 2021 course registration bill. Residential students will receive an additional $500 credit to their housing bill,” Fox29 reported.

“Part-time students will receive a prorated credit based on the number of courses taken in the fall.”

The University of Delaware and Delaware State University announced last week that they are requiring students to be vaccinated when the fall term starts. They did not include incentives.
