Top seeds advance in first round of wrestling state duals

DIAA Dual Team Wrestling State Championships 2023 200x215 1

All the top seeded teams in the DIAA Wrestling Dual Meet State Championships advanced to the semifinal round next Saturday at Smyrna High School.

 

Three Henlopen Conference teams advanced to the semifinals on Saturday. Sussex Central, Cape Henlopen and Caesar Rodney will represent the conference while Salesianum secured the fourth spot in the state’s final four.

 

Sussex Central 62 – Wilmington Charter 12

The Golden Knights rolled to a first round victory recording eight pins and improved to 21-0 on the season. Gabe Cannon (175), Ryder Robinson (215), Austen Decker (106), Malachi Stratton (113), Chase Murray (120), Justin Craig (138), Andrew Long (144), Cody Layfield (157) and Justyn Craig (165) all had pins for Sussex Central.

 Tyrus Kamenitzer (150) and Michael Hernandez (285) recorded pins for Wilmington Charter.

Sussex Central will meet Salesianum in the semifinals on Saturday.

 

Cape Henlopen 56 – St. Georges 9

Cape Henlopen used six pins in their 56-9 victory over St. Georges as the Vikings improved to 18-4 on the season. Patrick Donahue (215), Nick Walker (132), Josh Wright (138), Andrew Schaen (144), Luke Bender (157) and Jeffery Rainier (165) had pins for the Vikings.

Cape Henlopen will meet Caesar Rodney in the Division I semifinals on Saturday.

 

Caesar Rodney 44 – Smyrna 24

The Caesar Rodney Riders won 10 of 14 bouts with Owyn Meister recording the lone pin as the Riders won 44-24 and improved to 11-2 on the season.

Tyree Heath (138), Jose Washington (165), Kael Howell (190) and Chi Chi Eule (285) had pins for Smyrna.

Caesar Rodney will face Cape Henlopen on Saturday.

 

Salesianum 49 – Wm. Penn 17

Salesianum rode pins by Cameron Davis (135), Colin Honaker (144), James Miller (190) and Max Agresti (285) as Salesianum advanced to the Division I semifinals with a 49-17 win improving their record to 9-3.

Brooklyn Gordy (120) and Frank Norris (165) recorded pins for the Colonials.

Salesianum will meet top seeded Sussex Central on Saturday.

 

For the first time in tournament history there will be no Blue Hen or Henlopen Conference team in the Division II final four on Saturday. Non-conference teams Caravel Academy and St. Mark’s will join Independent Conference Tower Hill and Diamond State Conference representative Delaware Military Academy.

 

Caravel Academy 49 – McKean 21

The Bucs Craig Miller (175), Brock Rhoades (215), Eddie Radecki (120) and Luke Poore (132) recorded pins to help lead Caravel to a 49-21 victory over McKean. Caravel improved their record to 7-5.

McKean got pins from Michael McDonald (285) and Meliton Pena (126).

Caravel will meet St. Mark’s in the semifinals on Saturday.

 

Delaware Military Academy 56 – Red Lion Christian Academy 15

The Seahawks rolled to a 56-15 victory powered by pins from Tommy Easterling (113), Gavin Mundy (120), Dylan Delcollo (126) and Daniel Williams (138). DMA improved to 9-5 on the season.

The Lions Brayden Fabian (132) recorded their lone pin.

DMA will meet Tower Hill in the semifinals on Saturday.

 

Tower Hill 37 – Lake Forest 36

With the dual meet ending in a 36-36 tie the Hillers won the most pins recorded criteria 5-4 to advance to the Division II semifinals where they will meet Delaware Military Academy on Saturday.

Thatcher Flynn (113), Dominic Lucian (120), Aiden Pratt (126), Jack Duffy (144) and Anthony Lucian (175) had pins for Tower Hill while DeMarcus Russ (138) and Nurrideen Ahmad-Statts (157) recorded pins for Lake Forest. The Spartans also received two forfeits in the match.

Tower Hill improved to 14-4 this season. The Hillers are the first Independent Conference team to reach the semifinals.

 

St. Mark’s 42 – Laurel 34

St. Mark’s returns to the state dual semifinals for the first time in a decade, this time in Division II. The Spartans defeated Laurel 42-34 in the first round riding pins by Clif Bakhsh (106), Aaron Menickella (120), Alex Baxley (132) and Luke Spoor (165).

Laurel got pins from Ian Messick (113), Landon Messick (132), Stanley Pete (138) and Xavier Limehouse (144).

The Spartans improved to 10-2 this season and will take on defending state champion Caravel Academy in the semifinals on Saturday.

 

Division II teams will wrestle their semifinal matches on Saturday at 2:00pm and Division I semifinals will be wrestled at 4:00pm. Both championship matches will take place at 6:00pm at Smyrna High School on Saturday.
