The Corner Scoop – Week 1 Top 10

The field hockey season heats up after a week of action, while we all hope the temperatures cool off this week. We saw several games pushed back due to the extreme heat this week and no doubt that took a toll on the teams who played on back to back days. With one week of games in the book, it’s time to reorder the top ten picks and look at a game(s) of the week that will be  “must see live” by hockey fans. I encourage you to go watch some of the best players in Delaware high school field hockey this week. 

Games of the Week: 

Tuesday 9/12 (Division 2)  St. Mark’s at Newark Charter. Charter, now 2-0 on the season, battled to get the 4-3 win, taking the Spartans to double overtime. Amanda Rattay (NCS) scored the game winner, her 3rd goal of the game. St. Mark’s drops to 1-1 on the season. 

Thursday 9/14 (Division 1)  Smyrna at Cape Henlopen at Champions Stadium 6 pm.

Division 1 Field Hockey

No. 1 Smyrna 2-0 last week with a 3-0 over D-2 runner up Archmere and a 3-0 win over Sussex Academy. They will be tested at Cape Henlopen Sept. 14. We see the D-1 finals rematch at Cape Henlopen on Thursday’s Game of the Week. Smyrna beat Cape 2-1 in that contest. Dru Moffett, sister Bree Moffett and goalkeeper Halle Gieger are players to watch. Coach Moffitt’s team hopes to have a higher field hockey IQ and use that to their advantage this season. 

No. 2 Cape Henlopen 3-0 with wins in the Bi-State Tournament over Queen Anne’s (MD) 6-0, Pocomoke (MD) 12-0 and Lake Forest 6-0. The D-1 championship rematch with Smyrna at home on Sept. 14. Coach Austin says her team is focusing on getting better each day and their goal is to move as a unit on both sides of the ball. She feels it is the key to get back to the championship game and bring the trophy back to Cape. Addison Basile, Freshman Attia Sabbaugh, and LuLu Rishko are players to watch.

No. 3 Milford 2-0 with wins over Lake Forest and Appoquinimink. Milford has a well-balanced roster across all grades with six different players responsible scoring their 12 goals in two games. Appo recorded no shots on goal in their matchup. The Bucs are at Sussex Tech on Sept. 14. This is a team to watch and they are off to a great start. 

No. 4 Charter School of Wilmington 2-1 last week beating St. George’s, and losing 2-1 to Sussex Academy. The Force played at MOT Charter Sept. 12 and took home a 10-0 win, and home versus Appoquinimink Sept. 13 was postponed. Kelsey Shahan is the player to watch and Mya Brooks, goalkeeper, had 21 saves against Sussex Academy. 

No. 5 CR 2-0 win over Appoquinimink, holding Appo to just three shots on goal. They saw home action with a 2-0 win over Woodbridge Sept. 12 then will travel to Sussex Central Sept. 14. Players to watch are Brogan Callahan, Brooke and Elle Roberts.

No. 6 Middletown 1-0 with an 8-0 win over Mt. Pleasant. Goals came from seven different players so keep an eye on this team to see if they keep spreading the wealth on the offensive attack. This week the Cavaliers travel to Concord on Sept. 13 and host William Penn  Sept. 15.

No. 7 Polytech 2-0 with an 8-0 win over Laurel and a 3-1 win over St. George’s.  Players to watch are Addison Krout and Kylee LaVere. The Panthers travel to Concord on Sept. 13 and host William Penn  Sept. 15.

No. 8 Padua 1-2 The Pandas had a tough start to the 2023 season facing Tatnall (L 3-0) and Newark Charter (L-7-0). They will look to bounce back at Ursuline with a 2-0 win and with their home opener against St. Elizabeth’s on Sept. 15 at the Chase Fieldhouse.

No. 9 Sussex Tech 1-0 The Ravens opened this week against Holly Grove Christian School (MD) with a 3-2 win and then face Milford at home on Sept. 14. 

No. 10 Sussex Central 1-1 with a 7-0 win over Seaford and a 0-7 loss to Indian River. The Golden Knights will face a tough CR team on Sept. 14. 

Division 2 Field Hockey

No 1. Delmar 4-0 The Wildcats opened strong, scoring 16 goals and only giving up 1 in wins against Pocomoke (MD) (W-10-1) and Queen Anne’s (MD) (W-6-0). They kept the goals coming with a 9-0 win against Wilmington Friends and an 8-1 win over Indian River.  Jordyn Hollamon leads with 17 goals, 7 assists, Emily Bitters 4 goals, 4 assists, and Laela Brown with 5 goals are players to watch. Coach Jodi Hollamon said they have gaps to fill due to graduation but will look to senior leadership and junior Jordyn Hollamon to guide them through the season. “Players have worked hard and learned a lot in the pre-season.” They are off to another great start. 

No 2.  Newark Charter 2-0 opening with a 7-0 win over Padua. Coach Spiker told me they are fortunate to return all their starters. She said they have started the season with the intensity she likes to see and they focus on possession and playing together as a whole. They took a big win over St. Mark’s on Sept. 12 in double overtime winning 4-3. and DMA Sept. 14. Amanda Rattay and Audrey Nelson will be ones to watch. 

No 3. Caravel 2-0 The Bucs are off to a good start this season with wins over Dover (W 6-1) and Appoquinimink (W 3-0). Caravel rosters 24 with a good mix of 8th through 12th graders. They are looking to improve on last season’s 7-7-1 finish. They play Ursuline on Sept. 9/14. 

No 4. Sussex Academy 1-1  They opened their season with a 2-1 win over Wilmington Charter. This week they dropped a game to Smyrna 5-1 on Sept.12 at home. Next up is Laurel on Sept. 14.

Senior Callie Short and goalkeeper Kacie Rawlings are players to watch .

No 5 St. Mark’s 1-1 They opened their season 9/6 against Ursuline with a 6-0 win, St. Elizabeth’s Sept. 8 was postponed; they took a tough loss to Newark Charter on Sept. 12 in two over time periods, losing 4-3. The Spartans play Archmere on Sept. 9/14. Players to watch are Keiran Haywood,  Katherine Hanich, Claire Krause, and Catherine Kaminski. First year Coach and UD field hockey alum, Alexis Esbitt, says their game knowledge has been impressive to this point and they take care of each other as a cohesive unit. She hopes to bring a collegiate style of play, with solid fundamental, good hockey skills while having fun. 

No.6 Tatnall 1-0 They opened their season Sept. 6 with a 3-0 win over Padua and will see action against Wilmington Friends Sept. 14. Players to watch are Jordan Bartels and Paige Hiller.

No 7 Archmere 1-1 with a tough loss to D-1 State Champs Smyrna on Sept. 6, the game on Sept. 8 vs Wilmington Friends was postponed so they saw action again vs. Conrad on Sept. 12 and rebounded with a 10-0 win. The Auks will face Catholic rival St. Mark’s on Sept. 14. Coach Dell’Oso said they graduated 4 strong players but are rebuilding quickly. Goalkeeper Ava Hughes is their defensive anchor, according to Coach Dell’Oso. She fought off Smyrna’s attack with 13 saves.

No 8. Concord 2-0 They opened on Sept. 6 with a 6-0 win over Dickinson and a 2-1 win over  Middletown on Sept. 13 .The Raiders will see their sister school Brandywine Sept. 14. With only 13 on the roster, back to back games may prove tough. Players to watch Riley Greer, Lily Flynn, Madden Cole, and Menn Dombchik. 

No 9. Indian River 2-1 The Indians are off to a great start this season beating Sussex Central, 7-0 and Dover 3-1, before dropping a game to Delmar Wildcats.  They finished last season 6-9 and they have broken into my top 10 this week with a strong start to the 2023 season.

No. 10 Delaware Military Academy 0-1 with a 3-1 loss to Sanford. They play Sept. 14 at Newark Charter and that will be a test for the SeaHawks. Players to watch are Sidney Ziegler and goalkeeper Ashlee Feeley.
