It was a packed weekend for the Delaware Live Sports team as we had 5 games on the schedule for week 0! The final game of the schedule came on Saturday afternoon in New Castle as John Wells led his Sussex Central Golden Knights up to William Penn to take on the Colonials.
The fireworks came early in this one, as we had 3 straight scoring possessions from the teams. The Golden Knights, and their Wing-T offense, took advantage of a short field on their first drive after a high snap on a Penn punt attempt. Lead back PJ Henry pounded through the line for a one-yard touchdown with 8:55 in the first quarter. It was the first of 3 touchdowns on the day for the Delaware Live Sports Player of the Game. TJ Morris would convert the 2-point conversion to give Central an 8-0 lead.
Penn had their chances early in the game. On their first two 3rd down plays Rayan White-Taylor was able to get behind the Golden Knight coverage on vertical routes. The first one, young quarterback Mark Moore overthrew the speedy wide out for an incompletion, however they were able to connect on the second attempt for a 78-yard passing touchdown. The Colonials were not able to convert the PAT, which brought the score to 8-6.
It was all Central after this point. The Golden Knights out executed Penn in all three facets of the game and asserted their will throughout the game. Henry would score two more touchdowns before halftime. One on a 16-yard run, the other on a beautiful play action pass from TJ Morris to bring the halftime score to 24-6.
One thing that stood out about Sussex Central was their success in the passing game. TJ Morris would go 9/17 through the air for 126 yards & 2 touchdowns. Aside from connecting with Henry on the first half touchdown, Morris seemed to have great chemistry with fellow senior Jaxon Steen. Steen would finish the day with 5 catches for 52 yards, majority of which were on great catches on out-routes for first downs. He also collected two interceptions on defense.
Central would add three more touchdowns in the 3rd quarter to truly pull away from the Colonials. The young Penn team would struggle with penalties and turnovers throughout the game. They would add a late touchdown on a 1-yard run by Terrell Miller to bring us to our final score of 39-14.
Henry would end the day with 60 yards rushing on 9 carries & the lone catch for 30 yards with his three touchdowns for the Golden Knights. As a team Central would rush for 200 yards.
For the Colonials Mark Moore would finish with 96 yards passing on 3 of 9 passing with the touchdown pass to White-Taylor and two interceptions. Kafian Taylor ended with over 4 yards per carry but limited carries due to the game script having to change going down early. He finished with 4 carries for 17 yards.
Sussex Central will host Salesianum next week, Friday night at 7pm, a game you can catch with Benny Mitchell on Delaware Live Sports.
William Penn will travel into Pennsylvania to take on Penn Wood next Saturday for a 2:30pm kickoff.
