Delaware passed a sad milestone Friday, with 1,002 people dead from the COVID-19 virus.

The number of the dead rose by 45 in the week that ended Thursday, Jan. 14, at 6 p.m.

“On this day that we pass the heartbreaking milestone of 1,000 COVID-related deaths in Delaware, our hearts go out to all the families and friends who have lost a loved one to this disease,” said Dr. Karyl Rattay, director of the Division of Public Health.

“Even as our response continues to slow the spread of COVID-19 and to increase the pace of our vaccinations, we pause today to remember all of the precious souls lost to COVID-19. May their memory be a blessing to their families and friends.”

Also this week, the number of new cases and hospitalizations are high, but seem to be receding from what health officials hope may have been the peak of the post-holiday surge.

But they’re all still watching reports of new, more contagious strains of the virus spreading around the country.

The state also is trying to speed up vaccinations for healthcare workers and first responders so it can begin vaccinating people over 65 and essential workers.

Since March Delaware has logged 68,727 positive cases of COVID.  This week, the seven-day average of new positive cases decreased to 755.3 and the seven-day average for the percentage of persons who tested positive was 23.5%, down from 27.3% on Jan. 7.

As of Tuesday, Jan. 12, the seven-day average for the percentage of total tests that were positive was 8.6%, a drop from 10.3%.

The state has 451 individuals hospitalized due to COVID-19 , with 56 in critical condition.

The state announced it has administered 36,634 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, including many second doses.
