The St. Anthony’s Italian Festival and Wilmington Greek Festival – two of the city’s most popular annual events – have both decided to run events in June featuring takeout food.

The Greek Festival-to-Go will run June 2-5 at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N. Broom St.

The St. Anthony’s Italian Festival: Takeout Edition will run 4:30-7:30 p.m. June 8-11 at the St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, 901 N. du Pont St.

The Italian Festival is clear that it will be only takeout food (and a limited selection). “No on-site activities,” the festival says in a note on the bottom of one page, below content associated with the traditional in-person festival.

The Greek Festival is coy. “We’re working on a couple surprises to freshen things up and give you a bit of that live festival feel and, of course, the great food!” the Facebook announcement promised. “We’re hopeful – so hopeful – to be back Sept. 7-11 for the big festival.”

Greek Festival-to-Go

In years past, the in-person festival was the Delaware Valley’s largest Greek festival. George Rassias, president of the parish council, promised everything that was on the to-go menu last fall and hoped the choices will increase.

That menu last fall included dolmades, Greek salad, gyro, meatball sandwich, meatballs, mousaka, pastichio, spanakopita, tiropita, baklava, portokalopita, kataifi, kourambie, melomakarona, pasta flora and tsoureki. Specials included stuffed peppers, chicken with orzo, lamb sandwich and souvlaki.

The praise was swift on Facebook.

We are thankful that you are able to offer anything, and look forward to being able to celebrate all things Greek when the time comes!” Liza Gonzon wrote.

Yes baby, these my peeps!!” Kirsten Leounes wrote. “Literally. Have been wanting gyro so bad. No where can I get gyro like the festival. My bday week.”

The festival benefits the church.

St. Anthony’s Italian Festival: Takeout Edition

The festival is promising “a safe and convenient outdoor, takeout format,” with ordering and payment available online and on-site.

he menu will include sausage and peppers, meatball, and porkette sandwiches; daily specials (pasta fagioli on Tuesday, gnocchi on Wednesday, veal spezzato sandwich on Thursday and lasagna on Friday); cheese panzarotti; and cannoli.

That’s awesome!! “ Nikki Russo wrote on the festival’s Facebook page. “The food is what my family has looked forward to since the start.”

Proceeds benefit St. Anthony of Padua Grade School.
