It was a packed hill at Saint Mark’s High School on Wednesday afternoon for the Division 2 Girls’ Soccer semi-final. The defending state champion #2 Saint Mark’s Spartans (13-2) would meet a team that got the best of them back in early May, the #3 Wilmington Friends Quakers (13-1-1). It was a 3-0 shutout victory for the Quakers but a trip to the state championship game was on the line this time around.

The Spartans would strike first in the fifth minute off a corner kick. Lily Philips, recently making a return from injury, would send it across and find Ava Frohnapfel for the header. Frohnapfel would send it into the back of the left side of the net for a one-nil lead. It wouldn’t be long before the Quakers would find an answer. Reagan Brady would take a pass from Sofia Dattani and pin it in the top left of the net with precision to tie the game at one all. Later in the first-half Lily Philips would be patient on a small break and send a beautiful through ball to Whitney Evancho who took some contact, kept control, and blasted one by the keeper for a goal in the 35th minute. The Spartans would take a 2-1 lead into the half.

Things tightened up in the second half as both teams continued to battle in a physical contest. Then, in the 59th minute, another nice setup from Lily Philips as she found teammate Katie Lennon open on a break and Lennon did the rest. Almost fading away from the net she uses the left foot to hit it off the sidebar and into the net for the score. Guilana DiPrinzio would add one late for the Quakers, a shot from about 30 yards out that floated over the head of Cirillo for a 4-2 final score.

The Saint Mark’s Spartans are heading back to the Division 2 State Championship for the third consecutive year where they will meet the Archmere Auks. The Quakers finish off a great season with an overall record of 13-2-1. State Championship is set for 6 PM Friday night at Delaware State.
