A strong chance of a wintry mix of snow and sleet has prompted the National Weather Service to declare a hazardous weather outlook.
“Rain and snow likely before 3 a.m., then snow between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., then snow and sleet after 5 a.m.,” the weather service predicted for the Wilmington area. “Low around 30. Calm wind becoming east around 5 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.”
Tuesday’s forecast: “Sleet, possibly mixed with rain, becoming all rain after 7 a.m. High near 40. Northeast wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.”
Major roads in New Castle County were recently brined, so that might help at the start of the precipitation.

The same outlook was issued for northern Delaware and into southeastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey. The storm itself is a huge boomerang shape, going from the Plains to the mid-Atlantic and down to the Gulf of Mexico, so the big question is which areas will get the nasty precipitation and which will get rain.
The weather service’s regional map shows a 30-40% chance of more than 0.01 inches of freezing rain in New Castle County.

The forecast for Sussex County: “Rain.”
