Salesianum head soccer coach Scott Mosier became the winningest soccer coach in state history with Wednesday’s 8-0 win over Archmere in their 2024 regular season final.

Mosier passed Tom DeMatteis with his 357th win in his 24th season, 22nd at Salesianum. He is looking for his 20th state championship in his 22nd year as coach with Salesianum. DeMatteis won his 356 games over 25 seasons at Saint Mark’s.

“The record has never been the motivation,” Mosier told Delaware LIVE. “To have a career working with so many young players that I could mentor through their high school years has been incredibly rewarding. It has never felt like a job to me.”

Scott took over at Salesianum in 2002 and picked up his first win over Christiana after losing 2-0 to West Catholic in the season opener. They went 10-2-3 that season. They defeated No. 1 seed AI DuPont in the semifinals 4-0 and took on six-time Saint Mark’s Spartans in the state championship.

Junior Ryan Dougherty scored in overtime to give Salesianum the 3-2 win and their first state championship since 1994, when they needed eight overtimes to beat the Spartans 1-0.

Sallies heads to state tournament with No. 2 seed

Mosier has a 19-2 record in state championship games since taking over in 2002. The team will enter the state tournament this year on a seven-match winning streak since losing to the fifth-ranked team in the country, St Benedict’s Prep (NJ).

Mosier is now 357-67-19 in his 24th season as head coach in Delaware. That is an average of almost 15 wins a season (the maximum is 19 games with a state championship appearance. This is one of his youngest teams at Salesianum but they are having a great second half to the season and has a date with Sussex Central in the first round.

Salesianum is 7-0 against in-state opponents this year after the win over Archmere.
