  • Bird in The Grand worth 2 in parking lot: Indoor shows returning

      The Grand Opera House’s slate of entertainment includes comedian Brian Regan and the Temptations.   Intermission’s about over. With an appearance by comedian Brian Regan leading the way Sept. 26, The Grand Opera House on Tuesday announced the shows they’ve already booked for their indoor 2021-22 season, with the promise of more to be added. “We’ve been waiting for this day for a long, long time,” said executive director Mark Fields. “This is really just the first wave.” With Gov. John Carney announcing that he will lift his COVID-19 emergency order July 13, when it was set to run out, Fields said the facility is raring to go after having doors to its three stages shut for 467 days by the pandemic. Clever posters outside the Market Street theater cheekily proclaimed they would be right back after a brief intermission. “This is what we consider a start on next season, but we didn’t want to wait any longer before we provided things for people to start looking forward to,” Fields said. Unlike most years when the majority of the next year’s season is announced in the spring, “I expect that one of the changes that we will see coming out of the pandemic is, is that we’ll be announcing more shows as we go along than perhaps we have in the past.” Its season usually has about 70 shows, with most announced early. Tuesday’s announcement offers about half that. In addition to bringing in musical and variety shows, this announcement says its cast-iron front building’s 150th birthday on Dec. 22, 2021 will be celebrated over three months. The Grand also will bring back its popular Grand Gala and Broadway shows to the Playhouse on Rodney Square, but those announcements will come later. Comedy acts on the Grand schedule will include comedians Brian Regan and Lewis Black, internet sensation Vic DiBitetto, Colin Mochrie and Ryan Stiles of “Whose Line is It Anyway?” as well as TV’s Jane Lynch of “Glee” and “Criminal Minds” with Kate Flannery of “The Office” in a Christmas special. Music will include the return of Straight No Chaser, Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, The Temptations and singer Storm Large, who often appears with Pink Martini and now is doing well on “America’s Got Talent.” By the time The Grand opens for its first currently scheduled performance, it will have been 563 days since an audience sat in one of their theaters. But the buildings weren’t empty. A skeleton staff continued to clean and maintain the building and its facilities. The Copeland Auditorium stage was rented by several orchestras, including the Philly Pops and the Delaware Symphony Orchestra to record on. And the Grand itself produced concerts in the parking lot of Frawley Stadium, offered drive-in movies at Bellevue State Park and co-sponsored the Winter in Wilmington Drive-Thru Light Show on Wilmington’s Riverfront. Some of those extras may remain, Fields said. “There’s nothing that we’ve decided that we won’t do again,” he said. “Part of the decision on that will be whether there’s an ongoing interest. But I think it’s very likely that we will do outdoor performances again next summer. There appears to be an appetite for those.” Earlier in the spring, Fields and other arts organization leaders said that they were unsure about reopening indoor shows because they didn’t know how the average theatergoer would react. In recent weeks, Fields said, the concern seems to have lessened. Even so, a lot of what and who they booked was based on who was ready to be back on stage, not just personally, but also with bands and supporting personnel. He expects many of the artists to require local people working with them to wear masks. And one thing you won’t see in the list of shows are large choral groups, because there’s still some concern about virus spread in a large group of people singing. Fields had said last year when the Grand was closed and employees were laid off that the organization would need $5 million to reopen. Much of that is to replenish the endowments that management has been drawing down to keep things running and return them to the financial condition they were in March of 2020. The endowments usually help fund the theater’s annual operating expenses, not pay for everything. “We haven’t gotten all the way there. We’re making great progress,” Fields said. The organization has $2 million in hand, including $500,000 in Delaware COVID-19 relief funding with federal money. The Grand is waiting to hear from the federal Shuttered Venues program. If it is funded, “that will bring us much, much closer to our goal.” Fields pointed out in that in the recession of 2008-9, when arts groups were struggling, they were all essentially told that they were on their own. Arts groups spent the last decade-plus telling their story and talking about what they offer a community while lobbying for a greater share of the government pie. In the COVID crisis, many groups stepped in to help financially in Delaware. “If  there’s a silver lining in this pandemic — and I’m not sure that there is — it’s the fact that I think virtually everybody in positions of power or authority appreciate now the importance of the arts to the overall ecosystem of a community,” Fields said. “And that’s not just the economic impact of the arts but also on quality of life and education.” When this crisis occurred, shutting down performances and therefore natural links to donations and other support, “from every level of government, from every corporation what we heard almost unanimously is we understand the arts are important, and we will do what we can to help.” Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki hailed the return of indoor shows at The Grand. “When I look for sure signs that we are ready to return to a more normal and more enjoyable routine, I look no further than The Grand,” he said in the press release announcing the season. “Our City’s premier […]

  • Delaware writer takes on crime in Philly for latest book

      Delaware writer Kathryn Canavan’s ‘True Crime Philadelphia: From American’s First Bank Robbery to the Real-Like Killers Who Inspired Boardwalk Empire’ is out now   When a publisher asked Delaware’s Kathryn Canavan if she’d be interested in writing a true crime book about Philadelphia, she had an instant response. I don’t write about crime, Canavan told her. But, the publisher protested, you wrote about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Opening point to the publisher. Canavan, who lives in Deerhurst, earned a lot of praise and attention for 2015’s “Lincoln’s Final Hours: Conspiracy, Terror and the Assassination of America’s Greatest President.” It revealed details of the day that weren’t yet known, amazing and delighting assassination experts. Her new “True Crime Philadelphia: From American’s First Bank Robbery to the Real-Like Killers Who Inspired Boardwalk Empire” ($29 list; Lyons Press) follows in the same mesmerizing path. Focusing on crimes from the 1700s through the 1950s, Canavan found Philadelphia not only opened the first free library in the country, but also had the first kidnapping, the first bank robbery and the first octo-murder. Kathryn Canavan She discovered a ring of women who murdered their husbands for insurance money and then went to a matchmaking service run by the ring to find another spouse. Notorious Chicago hotel murderer H.H. Holmes was convicted in Philadelphia and hanged in an execution that turned into black comedy. And a bank robbery that turned into a public spectacle somewhere between the “Keystone Kops” and the race scenes in “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.” Her book proves that Florida Man has nothing on Philadelphia Man, or Men, or Woman, or Women. And the public involvement in many crimes — people in apartments dropping guns and ammo to strangers on the street to help battle a bank robbery — is amazing. Rather than being hard to stomach, Canavan said, slipping back in time was fascinating and even a break from the anger everywhere in today’s world. “It’s kind of fun to slip back into the 1950s and write about four guys in Philadelphia pulling off the biggest house burglary in Pennsylvania,” she said. Quite unexpectedly they discovered $500,000 in cash in the house’s basement and then had to figure out how to take it with them. “They drove away in a yellow Lincoln holding piles of money in their laps and screaming an Irish drinking song at the top of their lungs,” she said. One of the robbers used part of his loot to build a house that resembled the house they had robbed, painted it white like that house and carpeted in blue, because he had liked the interior decorating. Canavan relied a lot on old newspaper reports, coming to treasure the writing and reporting of The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Owen McDonnell and George M. Mahwhinney. She found an archive of photos from the now-defunct Philadelphia Bulletin at Temple University libraries in its Urban Archives and Special Collections Research Center. Along the way, she discovered fascinating reports, such as a woman who had a baby  at 5 p.m. one night and its twin late the next day. The “Mad World” bank robbery knocked the mom’s story off the front pages. She found a bride who tripped going down the aisle and died was buried in her wedding dress. There was a maid who also operated in Wilmington dubbed “30-minute Gertie” because she could strip a home owner of all valuables in less than half an hour. And a Black attorney named Pace Anderson who had attended Harvard Law School and won the case for one of the aresenic widows. Canavan discovered tragedies — a 22-year-old Black maid who had the mental age of 8 and was denied help her entire life because of her race. She robbed and killed her employer in a plan people believe her boyfriend set in motion. Pace Anderson couldn’t get her execution stopped. One of Canavan’s surprises was how much more flamboyant the personalities of the criminals and cops are than today’s. The organizer of the “Mad World” bank robbery became a local legend and when he was executed, thousands of people attended his funeral. One cop who tried for a decade to convict a sexy night club owner was praised for his police work, only to have people realize after he died that he’d actually had two families the whole time. “One of the things I realized was that for 300 years, Philadelphians really stepped up when anything would break badly and made a difference,” Canavan said. Passersby rallied to help stop the bank robbery. A 61-year-old bookmaker jumped off a trolley car to chase down the 21-year-old killer of a civil rights activist. A stranger recognized a prison escapee within 18 minutes of his escape, after he’d spent nine months tunneling under the prison wall. Neighbors figured out a woman who fell from her balcony had been killed by a fireplace poker. Her book sets itself apart about with hundreds of footnotes that tell readers exactly where she got the information and by the lively prose that’s drawn praise from reviewers and other writers. Canavan spent December 2019 and all of 2020 writing the book for a January 2021 deadline. Now she plans to turn back to the Lincoln assassination now, writing a book on the women involved in the case. She’s followed the trail of one of the eyewitnesses to California, where the woman finally settled. “Every once in a while someone from the assassination would die and the Washington Post or the Washington Star would write a story that so-and-so is the last person to have been a witness to the assassination,” Canavan said. “And she would write a letter to the editor saying, ‘You know, I’m still alive.’”

  • Heads up: Bear Drive In only takes admission at gate this weekend

    Yes, the Bear Drive In grand opening will be this weekend. No, you will not be able to buy tickets online, the twin-screen drive in website says. The theater, on Christiana-Bear Road behind the Bear Lowe’s, will sell tickets at the gate, and only plans to allow about 150 cars per screen. “Due to unforeseen circumstances, tickets for this opening weekend will not be sold online,” the website says “Tickets will be sold upon arrival and will be on a first come, first served basis. When each lot is full, gates will close. Anyone in line without tickets will be turned away if/when we reach capacity. We apologize in advance for the inconvenience.” Owner Bob Weir said earlier in the week that he hoped to have the online ticketing process up but it wasn’t possible. Gates will open at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the website said. The official address is  1061 E. Songsmith Drive. Showtimes will always be at dusk. While that will be about 8:30 p.m. this week, it will move earlier as the summer wears on to fall. The website asks for comments and questions at the end of the post, not through direct messages. The theater will open with “Jungle Cruise” and “Fast and Furious 9.” Tickets are $15 for adults ages 15 to 64, and include a 84-ounce bag of popcorn and a 16-ounce Coke, Diet Coke, Dr. Pepper, Sprite. ginger ale or water.  Discounts include $11 for those ages 55-plus, military or emergency personnel; and $11 for children ages 5 to 14, who get a smaller popcorn and drink. Children 4 and younger are free. The theater will only have one showing of each movie each night, Weir said. Weir discourages people from bringing in their own food. The concession stand will sell hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, candy and snacks. The theater will pipe the movie sound through car radios. Vehicles should be kept in auxiliary without motors running because of the dangers associated with carbon monoxide build-up, he said. The theater has equipment to help anyone whose battery dies, Weir said. Guests are welcome to sit in the bed of their own pickup trucks, to raise the hatchback on SUVs as long as they don’t rise above the vehicle and to put lawn chairs outside their own cars and sit there to listen. This week, it will screen films on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Starting Aug. 6, it will become a five-day a week theater, with the same movies running Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday. New movies will start on Fridays. “Thank you all so much for your patience and excitement!” the website said.

  • Snuff Mill Restaurant to open in Independence Mall in July

Photo by Joel Plotkin Photography.   Most Brandywine Valley residents have traveled on Snuff Mill Road, a wooded route that winds from Route 52 in Chateau Country to the Red Clay Creek in Yorklyn. Here you’ll find the 19th-century ruins of Garrett Snuff Mill, which once produced powdered tobacco for inhalation. The familiar name is about to take on a new meaning. Snuff Mill Restaurant is scheduled to open by mid-July in Independence Mall on Concord Pike. Chef Robert Lhulier Seasoned restaurateur Bill Irvin, executive chef Robert Lhulier and Joanne and David Govatos have partnered to create the 28-seat restaurant, which will also have a wine bar and a butchery. Customers come in for a meal or to purchase cuts of beef, pork, lamb and poultry, along with charcuterie and cheeses. The owners were inspired by the rural sensibility that a mill evokes. “We want you to feel like you’re in the country somewhere, and we’ve set up a table for you,” explained Lhulier, who has worked for University & Whist Club, Domaine Hudson and Harry’s Savoy Grill. He was the opening chef at Deep Blue Bar and Grill, now Tonic Seafood & Steak. The concept is “laser-focused,” said Irvin, who has owned or been associated with 16 Baltimore restaurants. In addition, he was a food-and-beverage director with the Ruth’s Chris Steak House and president of Phillips’ Seafood Restaurants. “A typical restaurant menu might have 30 items on it — if not more,” Irvin said. “We’re going to focus on high-quality ingredients.” This Snuff Mill salad includes smoked baby beets, mission figs, grated ‘Laughing Lindy’ goat cheese, purple basil, nasturtium leaves and cranberry tomatoes with a pomegranate balsamic dressing. The circle includes agriculturally rich Lancaster, which has some of the best cattle in the area, Irvin maintained. In a time of shortages, going local has an advantage. It is the large processing operations that are experiencing staffing shortages and backlogs, not the small ones, Irvin noted. Restaurateur Bill Irvin The partners aren’t concerned that two restaurants failed in the same location.  It is the former home of Chef’s Haven Café and, before that, De La Coeur Café et Boulangerie.) In 2015, Govatos opened Swigg, a boutique wine and spirits shop, at the same address. Two wine stores had failed in that space. However, Swigg was so successful that Govatos moved to a larger location across the parking lot. “David started a revolution here in Delaware, and we’re going to continue his ability to find small farm wineries and creating magical cocktails,” Irvin said. Govatos became involved in the new project after Irvin entered his shop and expressed a desire to open a restaurant with a butchery and wine bar. “It really piqued my interest,” the wine expert recalled. “I said I’d like to be a part of that. I wanted to touch the customer in a restaurant setting — I’m always preaching this farm-to-glass philosophy.” Govatos and Lhulier had long collaborated on Lhulier’s multicourse popup dinners, part of his Robert Lhulier Cuisine business. They’d brainstormed about opening a hospitality business. David Govatos Irvin also knew Lhulier. “Chef Ro-Bear is amazing,” Irvin said, using the chef’s nickname. “He’s cooked some amazing things.” Fans of Lhulier’s famous dinners will undoubtedly suffer a broken heart upon learning of the restaurant. He promises to offer the type of themed dinners that often sold out, which have included a tribute to the Beatle’s “White Album” or a meal inspired by Julia Child. At Snuff Mill Restaurant, he will apply his classic techniques to make sausages, bacon, pate and preserves. The UD art major’s keen eye will also be evident. Expect to find exquisite bistro-like touches in the décor.   Joanne Govatos Both Lhulier and Govatos are taken by Irvin’s enthusiasm. Indeed, Baltimore’s loss is Delaware’s gain; the hospitality specialist moved to Wilmington for love six years ago. The couple currently lives off Barley Mill Road. Come to think of it, Barley Mill would be an excellent name for a restaurant. “We might have one called Barley Mill one day soon,” Irvin said. “There might be a string of mills!” In the once mill-centric Brandywine Valley, the partners will have no shortage of material.   • Rabid deer found on residential property near Rehoboth Bayside outlets

    The state is warning anyone who may have had contact with a deer now diagnosed as rabid to contact their doctors and the state.   A white-tailed deer in the Rehoboth Beach-area has tested positive for rabies after exhibiting symptoms and being removed from a residential property by the Division of Public Health. The deer is the second animal in Delaware to have been diagnosed with rabies by DPH in the last week. A fox in Greenwood tested positive for rabies after biting a human last Friday.  The deer was located in the vicinity of Kings Creek Circle and Road 273 in Rehoboth Beach near Tanger Outlets Bayside.  DPH is now asking anyone in the area who thinks he or she may have been bitten, scratched or come in contact with a white-tailed deer to contact their health care provider and call the DPH Rabies Program at (302) 744-4995. An epidemiologist is available 24/7 to handle rabies-related cases, according to the press release.  Although rabies is very infrequently found in white-tailed deer, with Delaware’s deer hunting season having begun Sept. 1,  the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control recommends the following for anyone hunting in the area where the rabid deer was found: Minimize handling and do not consume any deer that was acting abnormal or appeared to be sick when harvested. Always wear latex or rubber gloves when field dressing deer. Minimize the handling of the deer’s brain and spinal cord. Do not allow pets around your field dressing area to prevent contact with deer blood and other tissues. Wash hands, boots and knives thoroughly after finishing field dressing a deer. If you harvest a deer and have it commercially processed, request that your venison is processed individually. Properly cook and prepare your venison. DPH has performed rabies tests on 139 animals since Jan. 1, 2021, with 11 confirmed to be rabid including one dog, one raccoon, one skunk, one fox, three cats, three bats and this deer. In 2020, DPH performed rabies tests on 121 animals, four of which were confirmed to be rabid, including one raccoon, one bat and two cats. DPH recommends individuals take the following steps to prevent rabies exposure: All dogs, cats and ferrets 6 months of age and older are required by Delaware law to be vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian. Pet owners can reduce the possibility of pets being exposed to rabies by keeping them indoors and not letting them roam free. It is especially important for pet owners who do allow their cats to roam outdoors to vaccinate their pets. Do not touch or otherwise handle wild or unfamiliar animals, including cats and dogs, even if they appear friendly. Do not keep your pet’s food or water outdoors; bowls can attract wild and stray animals. Do not feed feral animals, including cats, as the risk of rabies in wildlife is significant. Spaying or neutering your pet may reduce the tendency to roam or fight and, thus, reduce the chance they will be exposed to rabies. Keep your garbage securely covered. Consider vaccinating livestock and horses, as well. It is recommended to consult with your private veterinarian if you have any questions regarding whether your animal(s) should be vaccinated against rabies.
