WILMINGTON — Saint Mark’s won the state’s first-ever girls flag football championship at Fusco Stadium Wednesday night, defeating the Padua Pandas 30-27 on a last-second touchdown.

Spartans quarterback Maddie Faunaugh took the snap with 11 seconds left, dropped back, and threw a pass over the Pandas defense to hit Chloe Bedlow for a touchdown with 1.2 seconds left on the clock. The Pandas had one chance, but Saint Mark’s held on for the win.

The Pandas jumped out to an early lead and led the entire game before the last-second touchdown for the Spartans. Padua was led by Sienna Evans, who had four touchdowns, and quarterback Riley Blansfield found Lilliana DiMarco on numerous key passes to keep drives alive. Besides Bedlow’s game-winning touchdown, Kimorah Neal led Saint Mark’s with three touchdowns.

Girls’ flag football is not a DIAA-sanctioned sport yet, and only four teams competed this season—Saint Mark’s, Padua, Ursuline, and Delaware Military Academy. But the state has seen a number of schools start flag football club teams after seeing and hearing this group of teams was going to play this season. After seeing this game on our YouTube channel, we hope that the state will get to the 16 teams needed to make it sanctioning

Fusco Memorial Stadium is located on the DMA campus.
