Newark’s Reindeer Run & Romp partners with expanded Winterfest for a festive night of running, music, and community
NEWARK, Del. — Newark’s Reindeer Run & Romp 5K — one of Delaware’s most popular holiday races — returns Friday night with new attractions, bigger crowds, and a warning to would-be runners: spots are still available, but not for long.
The annual event, held in partnership with Special Olympics Delaware, steps off at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, from the Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Fire Station on Academy Street. Organizers said registration remains open as of Thursday, though the 5K traditionally sells out and is on pace to do so again this year.
“This race is a holiday tradition for hundreds of families, and we expect to hit capacity,” Special Olympics Delaware officials said in a statement urging people to register as soon as possible.
A Festive Run With a Mission
The Reindeer Run blends community cheer with a serious purpose, raising tens of thousands of dollars each year to support Special Olympics Delaware’s sports training, health programs, and statewide competitions. Many participants dress in reindeer antlers, Santa hats, and light-up holiday gear, turning the nighttime 5K into a moving stream of holiday lights through downtown Newark.
Runners can choose a chip-timed competitive option, while walkers may join a non-timed division. Registration is $35 with a long-sleeved T-shirt included; a $40 entry adds a chance to win Newark restaurant gift cards.
What’s New This Year
The 2025 race is fully integrated into Newark’s expanded Winterfest celebration, creating a festival-style atmosphere before and after the run. Winterfest features a new Holiday Artisan Market, live entertainment, tree lighting, caroling, and ice-carving demonstrations.
Newark Police also announced updated street closures, including Academy Street south of East Main Street, which will be blocked during the event. Participants are encouraged to arrive early and plan for limited parking near the fire station.
A Community Night Out
With thousands expected downtown, organizers say the evening is shaping up to be one of Newark’s biggest holiday gatherings of the season. Many local businesses, community groups and fire companies field teams each year, making the run a showcase of local spirit.
For families not running, Winterfest’s expanded offerings make the event a destination on its own.
How to Join
Registration remains open online until capacity is reached. Organizers encouraged residents to sign up immediately if they want to secure a bib.
“This event sells out nearly every year,” organizers said. “If you’re thinking about running — now is the time.”
