New COVID cases drop a bit; state will delay some mass vaccination events

With less Johnson & Johnson vaccine arriving in the new few weeks than planned, the state will delay some mass vaccination events

With Delaware on track to hit 100,000 cases of COVID-19 in the next 10 days, the state said the number of cases and positive tests both declined in the last week.

The Delaware Division of Health said that 97,784 positive cases have been recorded among Delaware residents since March 18, and the The seven-day average of new positive cases decreased to 314 as of Thursday, April 8.

At that rate, another 2200 cases could come in during the next week, putting Delaware’s total a few cases shy of 100,000 by this time next week.

The percentage of positive tests dropped to 5.3% from 5.5%.

The number of those hospitalized because of COVID-19 rose to 154, up 13 from last week, the state said. Twenty-one are critically ill, up thirteen from last week.

Delaware has seen 1,573 Delawareans die from COVID, with eight additional deaths since last week.

Tracking variant cases

As the state continues to find COVID-19 variants through routine surveillance of test specimens, the UK and one of the New York variants have by far the most cases.

The state has 64 cases of United Kingdom variant B.1.1.7, and 65 cases of New York variant B.1.526.

The other four variants had 14 cases among them..

Ninety-eight individuals were from New Castle County, 26 were from Kent County and 19 were from Sussex County.

The Delaware Public Health Laboratory has sequenced 1,426 specimens for COVID-19 variant strains to date, including 89 within the past week.

Vaccinations

With less Johnson & Johnson vaccine than expected in the next three weeks, and the need to give second doses for persons vaccinated at state-run events, Public Health said Friday it expects to have fewer large vaccination events in coming week than previously planned.

Those on the state waiting list may have to wait longer for an appointment, a state press release said. The state will increase access to first-dose appointments as soon as the supply increases again.

As of Friday, 544,615 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been given to Delawareans.

The state has received 536,600 doses and 143,575 doses have been delivered to pharmacies and others as part of the federal provider programs.

VA events Saturday, Sunday

The Wilmington Veterans Affairs Medical Center will hold vaccination events Saturday in Dover and Sunday in Georgetown. Walk-up shots will be available for veterans, their spouses and their caregivers, but pre-registration was preferred.

The Dover clinic will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Kent County VA Clinic, 655 S. Bay Road – Unit 3C. The Georgetown clinic will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Sussex County VA Clinic, 21748 Roth Ave., Georgetown.

If there is not enough vaccine for walk-up patients, the VA will do its best to register and schedule people on site for a future appointment.
