HOCKESSIN, Del. – The colors of autumn are arriving in the Brandywine Valley, and Mt. Cuba Center is inviting visitors to celebrate the season with a full weekend of outdoor activities designed to highlight the beauty of nature and the community spirit of fall.

Located at 3120 Barley Mill Road, Mt. Cuba Center is more than just a scenic public garden. Originally the private estate of Lammot du Pont Copeland and Pamela Copeland, the property was transformed into a nationally recognized botanical garden dedicated to native plants of the Appalachian Piedmont. Today, Mt. Cuba serves as both a sanctuary for wildlife and a living laboratory, educating visitors about the importance of conserving native species and creating sustainable landscapes. Its meadows, forests, and formal gardens showcase the power of native plants to support pollinators, improve soil health, and provide natural beauty year-round.

Voted Best Botanical Garden in the 2020 USA Today 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards, Mt. Cuba offers visitors a place to breathe, relax, and reconnect with the natural world. In addition to its public programs, the center conducts research on native plant species and provides resources for homeowners, gardeners, and professionals who want to create more ecologically balanced yards and communities.

Golden Hour Happy Hour – Thursday, Sept. 25

Kick off the weekend early by strolling the gardens during the most magical time of day. From late afternoon until dusk, visitors can enjoy half-price admission, sip seasonal drinks, and take part in a hands-on class such as Designing with Native Plants. Members receive free admission.

Tree Festival – Saturday, Sept. 27

Saturday’s Tree Festival celebrates the fall glory of Mt. Cuba’s towering trees. Guests can enjoy live music, plant sales, hayrides, and family-friendly activities throughout the gardens. The festival is free with regular admission, making it a perfect outing for all ages.

Fall Fun by the Fire – Coming in October

Looking ahead, Mt. Cuba will host Fall Fun by the Fire on Saturday, Oct. 25. This evening gathering features scenic hayrides, cozy bonfires with s’mores, and seasonal beverages—all set against a backdrop of brilliant autumn foliage. Advance registration is required.

A Mission of Conservation and Community

Mt. Cuba’s purpose goes beyond seasonal celebrations. Through its native plant gardens, research programs, and educational workshops, the center encourages visitors to create landscapes that support local ecosystems and protect biodiversity. By highlighting the beauty and resilience of native plants, Mt. Cuba inspires individuals and families to become stewards of the environment in their own backyards.
