WILMINGTON — Nicholas Moriello has resigned as president of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Delaware after six years in the role, the company confirmed last week.

In a written statement to Townsquare Live, Highmark spokesperson Natalie Di Sabatino said that Tom Fitzpatrick will serve as acting segment president. A University of Delaware graduate, Fitzpatrick also serves as President of Commercial Business for Highmark Health Plans across Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia, and parts of New York.

“We can share that Nick Moriello did resign from Highmark as the Delaware segment president,” Di Sabatino wrote. “We have a strong group of leaders in Delaware and our health plan business continues uninterrupted. Our commitment to the community and our BluePrints for the Community grant program remains unchanged. A national search for a new Delaware Segment President is underway.”

Highmark Delaware representatives said Moriello’s last day will be May 9. The company did not comment further, citing personnel matters.

The Delaware Department of Insurance confirmed it was notified of the leadership change on April 24, as required under national insurance regulations. The agency requires insurers to report executive-level changes within 60 days.

Moriello, a longtime insurance executive, had led efforts to expand Highmark’s footprint in Delaware, where it is now the largest health insurer. In 2023, the company reported $2.6 billion in revenue and provided coverage for more than 640,000 people in the state, including individuals enrolled in Affordable Care Act plans, small group policies, large employer groups, and Medicaid.

Highmark Delaware is part of Pittsburgh-based Highmark Health, which merged with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware in 2012 and now insures more than 7 million people across five states.
