WILMINGTON- In a tribute to the late Lieutenant Gregg Shelton, Governor Matt Meyer has ordered flags at all state-owned buildings and facilities to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
Lt. Shelton, a dedicated officer with the Elsmere Police Department, served the community for two decades.
Governor Meyer expressed his deep condolences in a statement Monday.
“I’m deeply saddened to learn of Lieutenant Gregg Shelton’s passing. For two decades, Lieutenant Shelton dedicated his life to protecting and serving the people of Elsmere with honor, courage, and compassion. Beyond his distinguished service in uniform, Gregg was a devoted family man, coach, and cherished community member who touched countless lives. His legacy of service and kindness will long be remembered. My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Claire, their children, his family, friends, and fellow officers during this incredibly difficult time.”
The Elsmere Police Department also issued a statement, mourning the loss of their respected colleague.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Lt. Gregg Shelton. Lt. Shelton was with the department for 20 years. He was an exceptional officer who gave his all to the community, his family, and his friends. Lt. Shelton, you have earned your wings—rest knowing we have your watch from here.”
