WILMINGTON — Crosstown rivals faced off for the first time this season as the home-standing Goldey-Beacom Lightning held off a second-half comeback to beat Wilmington Wilmington by an 87-85 score.
Goldey took a 51-35 lead into halftime after dominating the first half. They built on that lead early in the second half, going up by 24. But WilmU didn’t lie down, deciding instead to step up the pressure.
It paid off.
The Wildcats went to a full-court press that gave the Lightning fits. WilmU forced Goldey to turn the ball over numerous times, leading to multiple points for Wilmington. The Wildcats found themselves by two points with about two minutes to go. Goldey-Beacom coach TJ Dekmar said, “We just got lazy. They were just beating us to every ball. We have a young team with a lot of sophomores and a freshman on the court.”
WilmU outscored the Lightning 50-36 in the second half, but Goldey-Beacom held on for the two-point win. Zakari McQueen led all scorers with 24 points. WilmU was led by Tre Hawkins, who scored 23 points.
Coach Dekmar said, “Any time we get a win over those guys, it’s a good win. We all know each other very well. I even watched some of their guys in high school, so it really is nice when you win.”
