WILMINGTON – First State Ballet Theatre (FSBT) is set to premiere a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at The Grand Opera House this April.
Shakespeare’s beloved comedy comes to life in a reimagined ballet. Choreographed by Zachary Kapeluck, and costumes designed by Martha Chamberlain.
Shakespearean theatricality has been a trademark for the FSBT this year, opening their season in October with Romeo & Juliet.
“Audiences are enjoying the dramatic range of our dancers’ artistry,” The FSBT wrote to Delaware Live.

Zach Kapeluck, known for his dynamic and engaging movement style, has previously showcased his work in FSBT’s Up Front on Market and the Triple Bill program in 2023. Before joining FSBT, he spent nine years at BalletX in Philadelphia, performing in over 60 world premiere productions.
Kapeluck’s Ukrainian heritage has inspired the visual and storytelling aspects of this production.
“I am third-generation Ukrainian, and I am hugely inspired by my heritage – particularly the midsummer traditions of Ivan Kupalo,” Kapeluck said. “On this holiday there are a few special customs that you’ll see carried into the ballet.”
“For example sending wreaths of flowers into the river (the folklore promises this will lead you to your true love) and bonfires lit throughout the night for couples to jump over in a sort of commitment ceremony to each other.”
“The “Bottom” character is reimagined as a kobzar – or a traveling musician.”
Not only will the production include his heritage visually, but also chose a selection of music entirely by Ukrainian composers.
The costumes are inspired by traditional Ukrainian aesthetics, but in a sophisticated, updated way which allows the dancers the ability to move freely.
Martha Chamberlain, a former principal dancer with Pennsylvania Ballet, transitioned to costume design after her retirement in 2011. She has since collaborated with BalletX, creating costumes for multiple well known choreographers.
The FSBT wishes to present ballet boldly to Delaware, demonstrating to local audiences they don’t have to travel to larger metro-areas to experience engaging performances.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream will run on Saturday, April 5th and Sunday April 6th.
Tickets start at $25 and are available through The Grand Box Office online, by phone at (302) 652-5577, or in person at 818 N. Market Street, Wilmington, DE.
