WILMINGTON There are only a few chances left to catch ‘The SpongeBob Musical’ at the Delaware Children’s Theatre, as the show wraps up its celebratory run on Sunday, May 4.

In honor of the animated series’ 25th anniversary, the Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) edition of the musical transforms the historic Wilmington stage into the colorful underwater world of Bikini Bottom. Complete with a pop-rock score featuring original songs by icons like David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, and Sara Bareilles, the production has been drawing families from across the region with its energetic performances and eye-catching visuals.

The final show dates include:

  • Friday, April 25 at 7 p.m. (special evening performance)

  • Saturday & Sunday, April 26–27 at 2 p.m.

  • Closing weekend: Saturday & Sunday, May 3–4 at 2 p.m.

Directed by Kenn Koubek, whose background includes designing tour visuals for artists such as Journey and Tom Petty, the show merges big-stage creativity with the intimate charm of community theatre. While the venue lacks some of the high-tech trappings of larger venues, Koubek says the production makes up for it with heart and ingenuity.

“I love working in this space and incorporate what I’ve learned working on touring productions with major acts into a family show,” he said. “We don’t have fly space or high-tech stage automation—but we do have creativity, community, and a lot of heart. Audiences don’t expect to see this level of visual storytelling at a children’s theatre, and it’s a joy to surprise them.”

Hand-painted sets, clever costumes, puppets, and unexpected video projections all come together thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers. True to the theatre’s mission, this production is a family affair—both in the audience and behind the scenes.

“The Delaware Children’s Theatre truly is families entertaining families,” Koubek adds. “It’s a magical, inviting place where creativity is nurtured, and community thrives.”

With only two weekends remaining, audiences have a limited window to experience the musical’s blend of whimsy, humor, and messages of optimism and friendship.
