Ben Pizarro led Tatnall to the Boys Division II championship with a winning time of 15:27, the fastest time of the day.
FELTON — The nearly “flat” course at Killens Pond State Park, combined with light winds and cool temperatures (mid-50’s), provided favorable conditions for 562 of Delaware’s finest high-school distance runners for the DIAA Cross Country championships.
The Girls’ races saw 47 teams participating, while 49 teams were represented on the Boys side.
The day began with the Girls Division II race event as senior Katie Payne from Tatnall led two of her teammates across the finish line in a time of 17:37. The Hornets won the team title with St Andrew’s and Archmere taking second and third, respectively.
Anna Bockius of Padua easily wins the Division 1 DIAA Cross Counry Championship
In the Girls Division I race, Padua took the first six places – led by junior Anna Bockius in a time of 17:41 — to win the team title in dominating fashion. Charter School of Wilmington placed second, while Appoquinimink finished third.
Ben Pizarro led Tatnall to the Boys Division II championship with a winning time of 15:27, the fastest time of the day. St. Andrew’s took second place, with Sanford finishing third.
Salesianum edged Cape Henlopen for the Division I title, with 56 points to the Vikings 59. Cape Henlopen’s Jason Baker won in a time of 15:54.
Division II Winner Senior Katie Payne said, “This is my last race wearing a Tatnall jersey.” She then summed up the day for many when she said, “I just ran with all my heart.”
