Delaware blew past the 100,000 mark for 100,322 new COVID-19 cases and saw both the number of new cases and the overall percentage of tests rise in the last week.

Hospitalizations, though, held at 145, down 9 from last year. Nineteen of those are considered critically ill.

As much of the nation battles what seems to be a spring surge fueled by variants from the United Kingdom and other places, Delaware’s seven day average of new cases rose to 366 per day, and the percentage of persons testing positive for COVID rose to 26.7%. up from 23% last week. The percentage of positive tests rose to 6.4%, up from 5.4%.

The state reported 23 additional deaths, bringing Delaware’s total to 1,596.

Variant cases

While no one is sure how many variant cases there are, the cases caught by random sampling of tests rose last week, too.

The state now has 95 cases of the United Kingdom variant, and 81 cases of the New York B.1.526 variant. About 20 cases involving five other strains also have been identified. Most were found in New Castle County.

But, like flu totals, those are not the total cases in circulation. Like flu cases, only a fraction of positive tests are actually confirmed in a lab, meaning it’s likely that hundreds of the cases are circulating.

Variants are considered more infectious, but not as deadly. The Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are considered effective at preventing those who are vaccinated from being infected and, if they are infected, from preventing severe cases.

The Delaware Public Health Laboratory has sequenced 1,518 specimens for COVID-19 variant strains to date, including 92 within the past week, a state press conference said. State officials said Tuesday that the percentage of variant cases rose sharply last week.

Vaccinations

As of Friday morning, 616,445 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Delaware.

A total of 588,120 doses have been delivered to the state, and 165,405 doses have been delivered as part of the federal provider programs going to pharmacies and places such as the Veteran’s Administration.
