Delaware has 35 pop-up testings sites set, and Walmart is about to start vaccinating

Delaware has 35 pop-up testing sites set for the week of Feb. 1, and Walmart is about to start vaccinating.

With the number of new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations beginning to recede, Delaware has vaccinated almost 1/10 of its population and is continuing pop-up testing with 35 sites the week of Feb. 1.

The seven day average of new cases dropped to 534 as of Thursday, down hundreds of cases per day over the last month. The average of people testing positive dropped to 22.1 percent and the percentage of total tests that were positive dropped to 7.5 percent, down from last week’s 9 percent.

The state said 1,078 people have died from COVID-19, up 51 since last week.

Vaccinations

As of Friday morning, the state had administered 92,552 administered doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and had begun vaccinating teachers and others in phase 1b besides those older than 65.

Gov. John Carney said on his Facebook page that Delaware’s vaccination rate is “better than most states.”

“And we’re still working hard to expand access to this life-saving vaccine,” he said.

Delawareans 65 and older can still register for the waiting list. Delawareans without computer access can call the COVID-19 Vaccine Call Center at 1-833-643-1715, and a call center operator will assist them with making the initial request.

Walmart, pharmacies and other sites also are starting to advertise that they will provide vaccine shots, but the amount of doses they receive will be controlled by the state as will who can get the shots as the state moves through its phased rollout. Most stores will not get a lot of doses.

A Walmart press release this week listed these stores as ready to inoculate: Milford at 939 N. DuPont Blvd.; Rehoboth Beach at 18922 Rehoboth Mall Blvd.; Georgetown at  4  College Park Lane; Camden at  263 Walmart Drive; and Wilmington at 1251 Centerville Road.

Walmart and Sam’s Club are expected to launch online schedulers next week, so eligible populations can sign up directly from our website. The Walmart press release said those who want to schedule an appointment should check the state health department’s website for more information.

Vaccination statistics can be found under the Vaccine Tracker dashboard at de.gov/healthycommunity.

Additional information about COVID-19 vaccine rollout, which includes a list of pharmacies and medical providers accepting public requests for vaccination, is available at de.gov/covidvaccine.

Questions can be directed to the Vaccine Call Center at 1-833-643-1715. People who are deaf or hard of hearing should call 2-1-1 or text their ZIP code to 898-211. Individuals can email their questions concerning the vaccine to [email protected].
