The number of new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Delaware continue to decline, mirroring a national trend.

Even so, the state and others will offer more than 30 free pop-up testing sites next week, with events in all three counties.

The number of COVID-related deaths rose last week to 1,191 with the addition of 113 additional cases, about half from a review of death certificates.

Delaware is nearing 79,546 positive cases, but the seven day average for the percentage of people who tested positive was 20.8%, down from 22.1% last week. The seven-day average for the percentage of total tests being positive was 6.9 percent, down from 7.4 percent last week.

A total of 79,546 positive cases of COVID-19 among Delaware residents have been reported to DPH since March 11, 2020. The seven-day average of new positive cases decreased to 379 as of Thursday, Feb. 4.

In addition, 290 individuals are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 in Delaware, which is a decrease of 30 as of this time last week. Forty of the hospitalized persons are critically ill, down 6 from last week.

Where  vaccines stand

A total of 117,662 vaccines have been administered, according to the state tracking system. The state will continue having vaccine events, but many other groups, including pharmacies and hospitals are also going to be delivering the shots.

Nationally, President Joe Biden used a defense powers act to help Pfizer and Moderna get the equipment they need to speed up vaccine production. He also called up 1,100 National Guard members to help give vaccine in some federal vaccine centers. And the NFL offered all of its stadiums to help vaccinate people.

Public health officials around the country want to get as many people as possible vaccinated to save lives, to fully reopen the economy and to protect people as more infectious strains of COVID-19 have begun circulating.

This week, Gov. John Carney modified his COVID-19 emergency order to say that those giving the vaccine must report within 24 hours who got it, including ethnicity. That’s partly because a review of the vaccine already delivered showed only about 7 percent went to minorities. He also forbid pharmacies and others from charged for the shots, but said they could collect insurance information.

A list of pharmacies and medical providers accepting public requests for vaccination is available at de.gov/covidvaccine. Questions can be directed to the Vaccine Call Center at 1-833-643-1715.

Scam warning

The Delaware Division of Public Health is warning the public about a potential phone scam regarding distribution of COVID-19 vaccine in Delaware.

People have reported receiving calls claiming to be from the State of Delaware offering a COVID-19 vaccine for $75.

The vaccine is free and there are no out-of-pocket costs associated with receiving the vaccine, DPH warned. The public should be advised that anyone calling to offer COVID-19 vaccination for money is not legitimate.

If you receive such a call, please report it to the Delaware Department of Justice’s Fraud and Consumer Protection Unit at 302-577-8600.

Super Bowl Sunday

Public Health also warns people not to gather for Super Bowl parties or other large gatherings, especially as the holiday peak is finally declining.
