This flag welcomed the 2020 Wreaths Across America trucks to the Town of Whitehall last year.

A convoy of 12 tractor-trailer trucks taking wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery will make three stops in Delaware.

Wreaths Across America calls the run made by the semis loaned by various corporations “the country’s longest veterans’ parade” because it is taking handmade wreaths to Arlington to decorate the graves there. They must be at the cemetery on Dec. 18.

The caravan will arrive in Delaware on Thursday, Dec. 16, at 9:30 a.m. at the Guardians of the Defenders Monument at 3200 Philadelphia Pike in Claymont.

At noon, the trucks will arrive at St. Mark’s High School at 2501 Pike Creek Road in Wilmington, where a short ceremony and wreath presentation will be made. That event is open to the public, with doors opening at 11:45 a.m. The event is expected to run from 12:15 p.m. until 1:15. Because of school security and COVID-19 protocols, pre-registration is required here.

The final stop in Delaware will be at 2:15 p.m. at Delaware Volunteer Hose Co., 27 W. Green St. in Middletown.

The convoy began 30 years ago when Maine wreath maker Morrill Worcester took a single truck to deliver 5,000 wreaths to Arlington as a gesture of thanks. The trip down the East Coast has become a mission to Remember, Honor and Teach, the organization says.

This year nearly 257,000 sponsored wreaths are needed to reach the goal of placing a wreath on every eligible marker at Arlington National Cemetery. To sponsor a $15 wreath, go here.

The trucks represent Walmart, Schneider National, Gully Transportation, Witte Bros. Exchange Inc., Hartt Transportation Systems Inc., Delhaize Transportation/Hannaford Supermarkets, American Trucking Associations – Share the Road Truck, Pottle’s Transportation, Cargo Transporters Inc., Boyd Grain Inc., Hampton Road Moving & Storage and Tyson Foods Inc.

The trucks will stop in Maryland and Washington, D.C. before arriving at the cemetery.
