ChristianaCare has appointed Dr. Vishesh Agarwal as chief of Addiction Medicine Services, a leadership role that will oversee and expand the health system’s approach to substance use disorder treatment.

In his new position, Agarwal will direct addiction care across inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and consultation settings at ChristianaCare. He is tasked with developing consistent clinical guidelines, supporting interdisciplinary teams, and advancing comprehensive treatment strategies for individuals affected by substance use.

One of Agarwal’s main priorities will be identifying opportunities to expand ChristianaCare’s addiction services and increase the organization’s impact on individuals and families dealing with substance use disorders. His leadership is expected to play a key role in advancing the health system’s efforts to deliver innovative, high-quality care.

“Dr. Agarwal has been an integral part of our team as vice chair of the Department of Psychiatry, and we are thrilled to see him step into the position of chief of Addiction Medicine Services at ChristianaCare,” said Mustafa Mufti, M.D., chair of the Department of Psychiatry.

“His deep understanding of our mission, exceptional leadership skills and unwavering commitment to excellence in patient care will be essential in advancing and elevating the addiction medicine services we provide.”

Agarwal will retain his current position as vice chair of the Department of Psychiatry at ChristianaCare. In that capacity, he leads clinical and operational initiatives within the Behavioral Health Service Line and continues to oversee the Behavioral Health Unit, crisis services in the Emergency Department, and inpatient psychiatric consultations.

Agarwal is board certified in psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and obesity medicine, with nationally recognized research on behavioral health. He earned his medical degree from Gauhati Medical College, completed residency at Einstein Medical Center, a fellowship at Zucker Hillside Hospital, and holds an Executive MBA. He also teaches at Sidney Kimmel Medical College and serves on the board of the Mental Health Association in Delaware.
