YMCA Black Achievers

From Left: A’sian Rochester, Allen Henry, and Bessie Mason

The YMCA Black Achievers program aims to inspire African American teens by focusing on college readiness and career awareness through mentorship. Every week, these young individuals gather at the Walnut Street YMCA, in Wilmington, eager to learn and prepare for their futures. The local business community nominates African American mentors from various career fields based on their accomplishments and the contributions they can offer to students.

Three outstanding mentors from ChristianaCare were recognized at the 2024 YMCA Black Achievers banquet for contributing their expertise and passion to the program.

Allen Henry, a staff associate in Patient Financial Services, has been with ChristianaCare for seven years. He coaches flag football, assists rehabilitated individuals with reentry into society and serves as a life coach to teens and adults, offering valuable wisdom and experience.

Bessie Mason, a business manager in Admitting, joined ChristianaCare a year ago. She is passionate about mentoring, seeing it as a chance to provide the guidance she sought in her youth. Her dedication to helping people makes her a cherished mentor.

A’sian Rochester, a nursing coordinator at ChristianaCare for six years, is a first-generation college graduate and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She volunteers with Special Olympics of Delaware and Habitat for Humanity, demonstrating her commitment to community service.

As part of its commitment to community and empowerment, ChristianaCare provides mentorship, career guidance, and community service opportunities to support the program’s success.

“We are incredibly grateful to our mentors from ChristianaCare for their dedication and support,” said Natalie Torres, director of Inclusion & Diversity at ChristianaCare.

“Their commitment to guiding and inspiring these young achievers is truly commendable. They are empowering the next generation of leaders and equipping them with the tools they need to succeed.”
