Friends holds off Buccaneers for state title

The Wilmington Friends school won its second state with a 10-7 victory over the Caravel Buccaneers. The Quakers were in the championship game in 2018, but had some major injuries that created a lopsided loss to Woodbridge. Their last state championship came in 1984 with a 22-12 victory over Claymont.  The Quakers were led by the third generation of Tattersall’s …

Smyrna Eagles “fly high” for state title

Glenn FrazerHeadlines, Sports

In their semifinal victory two weeks ago, the Smyrna Eagles used multiple offensive sets to feature the run game, only attempting five passes to advance to the championship game. Once they got to Delaware Stadium, it was Brian Wright and the passing attack that propelled the Eagles to the 4th title in school history since 2015. It just goes to …

Benny MitchellHeadlines, Sports

Pike Creek – The formula to winning a wrestling dual meet is simple. Find seven pinners on your team and then at least one that can stay off their back. The Caesar Rodney Riders used that formula to win their season opening non-conference match over St. Mark’s 46-30. The Riders won seven matches by pin and picked up a major …

Friends rely on Tattersall for trip to finals

Glenn FrazerHeadlines, Sports

As I walked on the field before the game, I nearly slipped and fell several times. I knew then the rain-drenched conditions at the “graveyard” would play a pivotal role in the semifinal between Wilmington Friends and St. Mark’s. Any advantage the home team Spartans might have had with their “speedy” running backs was neutralized. T-J Martin carried the ball …

Glenn FrazerHeadlines, Sports

Caravel head coach John Reed and his Buccaneers are headed to the state championship game as the undefeated, top-seed in the DIAA class 2A. There are those who questioned the “toughness” of Caravel’s schedule as a few teams in District 3 had subpar seasons. After Friday night’s performance against defending champ Archmere, those questions have been laid to rest.  …

Dover – The players on the Dover Senators football team were not even born the last time the Senators played in the state championship game in 2001. Most of their parents are too young to remember the last time Dover won a state title in 1988, but they are all aware now that the Senators are headed to Delaware Stadium …
