Gov. John Carney Facebook post

Gov. John Carney said on his Facebook page Thursday morning that he’s deploying Delaware National Guard members to Washington, D.C.

Carney said he had talked to District of Columbia authorities and the National Guard will “support law enforcement and ongoing security efforts after the breach at the Capitol.”

After a mob breeched barricades and broke into the U.S. Capitol Wednesday, both Virginia and Maryland sent National Guard members to help those already deployed by the U.S. assist D.C. and Capitol police.

Within moments, Carney’s post had hundreds of comments.

Most thanked him or the National Guard.

“THANK YOU to all that are in harm’s way to keep our Country safe,” wrote Roxanne Haley. “Be safe.”

“Yes because the national guard should have been there in the first place because the police department is corrupt,” wrote Mona Walley.

But some criticized his move to send the Guard to D.C. when it he didn’t use it to help during a 2017 prison riot or during social justice protests in Wilmington last summer when city restaurants and businesses were broken into and looted.

“Why now?” wrote Mark McGuire. “You refused to send them to DC few months ago? You didn’t send them when we needed them in Wilmington few months ago…….Mr. Governor please be fair its not all about your personal agenda.”
“Carney didn’t do anything to help with the prison riot in Smyrna,” wrote Cheryl Cook, “but he wants to get in on the act now in DC.”
One man even offered to help.
“I am retired military,” wrote Chuck Mckee, “and if you need me, I am here !!!”
