CHADDS FORD, Pa. (Sept. 8, 2025) — The sounds of cannon fire, fifes and drums will once again echo along the Brandywine this weekend as the Chadds Ford Historical Society hosts its annual Battle at Chadds Ford ~ Historic Chadds Ford Days. The two-day festival, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13–14, offers an immersive look into Revolutionary War life while celebrating community spirit and local culture.

Weekend Schedule

On Saturday, gates open at 10 a.m. with battlefield reenactments taking place twice daily, along with military drills for youth, colonial encampments, and demonstrations of historic trades including beer brewing, blacksmithing, wool dyeing and wood carving. Visitors can also browse artisan stalls, meet local authors and nonprofits, and enjoy live music, food trucks and beverages from area producers.

The day culminates with Tavern Night in the Grove from 6–9 p.m., a new addition that organizers say will give visitors a chance to “step back in time” and socialize as their 18th-century counterparts once did. Cannon fire will signal the start of the evening, when the grove transforms into a lively colonial tavern atmosphere under twinkling lanterns and candlelight. Guests can sip local libations from Braeloch Brewery, Chadds Ford Winery, Penn Distillery and others while enjoying hearty food and traditional colonial entertainment.

The Sea Dogs, a well-known maritime and folk music group, will lead sing-alongs of 18th-century songs, encouraging crowd participation much like the taverns of the Revolutionary era. Attendees are invited to dress in period attire, adding to the immersive feel of the night.

We want people to feel like they’re part of history while enjoying an unforgettable evening together.”

Sunday’s schedule, running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., continues the battle reenactments and colonial demonstrations while adding family-friendly activities. Children can try candle making, tin crafting, marble games and period dress-up, with keepsake crafts available for all ages.

A Living History

The annual event commemorates the Sept. 11, 1777 Battle of Brandywine, the largest single-day battle of the American Revolution. Historians note that nearly 30,000 troops clashed that day, forever linking the quiet village of Chadds Ford to the struggle for independence.

“The Battle at Chadds Ford is more than a reenactment,” organizers said. “It’s about connecting today’s community with the heritage of those who fought here nearly 250 years ago — and this year’s Tavern Night gives people a chance to experience not just the battles, but also the camaraderie and culture of the era.”
