NEW CASTLE — One of Delaware’s most cherished traditions marks a major milestone this year. On Saturday, May 17, Historic New Castle will host the 100th anniversary of A Day in Old New Castle, the nation’s longest-running home and garden tour.
The daytime event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering a full day of historic tours, performances, and family-friendly activities across the town’s storied streets.
Every year, A Day in Old New Castle allows visitors to experience the magic of this preserved colonial town, but organizers say the centennial celebration will be the biggest yet. Tickets include access to private homes and gardens, entry to five museums, special performances, and a tour of the tall ship Kalmar Nyckel.
Guests who attend dressed in colonial or Victorian clothing will receive $1 off admission.
“A Day in Old New Castle gives families a unique chance to actually step back in time and see what life was like over 100 years ago and what it’s like now. Truly, nothing much has changed since 1651. We look forward to seeing you then!” said Cindy Snyder, resident and co-chair of A Day in Old New Castle.
Adding to the excitement, visitors can enjoy activities and food on the Green and take in performances throughout the day.
“Historic New Castle welcomes you to our town for A Day in Old New Castle. On Saturday, May 17th, we open our homes and gardens to you. Join us on the Green for activities and food. Tour the tall ship, Kalmar Nyckel. There is something for everyone in the family,” said Valarie Leary, Mayor of Historic New Castle.
Following the days activities, the celebration continues with a “1920s Swinging Soiree” offering guests achance to party Great Gatsby-style. Marking 100 years of history, the event commemorates the original Day in Old New Castle from 1925.
The “Soiree” will be held from 7:00–10:00 p.m. at Zollie’s Shaw Alley venue. Guests are invited to dress in period attire and enjoy an evening of acclaimed cuisine, live jazz music, and taste beverages inspired by the 1920s.
Proceeds from the Soiree will support A Day in Old New Castle, the New Castle Community Partnership, and other nonprofit partners.
