The eighth annual HBCU Week in Wilmington kicks off Sunday with a jammed pack schedule and plenty of scholarship money to dish out.
The week honors and celebrates Historically Black Colleges and Universities, encourages high-school aged youth to enroll into HBCUs, provides scholarship dollars and sustains a pipeline for employment from undergraduate school to corporate America.
There’s several HBCU Weeks in different cities, all organized by the HBCU Week Foundation.
Last year, there were a total of more than 1,300 scholarships offered totaling $22 million.
“Together, we are fostering a future where talented students can pursue their dreams of higher education at HBCUs without the burden of financial constraints,” said Ashley Christopher, founder of the HBCU Week Foundation, in a statement.
HBCU Week has untold significance and impact in Delaware, said Raye Jones Avery, co-lead of the Wilmington Center for Education Equity and Policy.
“Without awareness of higher education opportunities and resources shared during HBCU Week, access to historically Black colleges and universities is very unlikely for our youth,” she said. “HBCU’s fuel excellence in every profession.”
HBCU students and graduates know their worth and power transformative movements in pursuit of democratic ideology, she said.
