The Wilmington Riverfront came alive this morning as hundreds of runners and walkers gathered for the 35th Annual Westside 5K and 10K The Westside Way. Hosted by Westside Family Healthcare, the event blended fitness, fun, and philanthropy along one of the city’s most scenic routes.

A Morning of Movement and Motivation

Runners lined up under clear skies near Hare Pavilion, where the 10K began at 8:30 a.m. followed by the 5K at 8:40. The course wound through the Riverwalk and wetlands, offering peaceful water views and a festive atmosphere filled with cheers, music, and high-fives. Families, competitive runners, and casual walkers all joined in, many donning bright shirts from previous Westside races that matched the spirit of the day.
Volunteers greeted participants with smiles, handed out bibs, and directed runners to free parking areas nearby. For many, the race has become an annual tradition that signals the start of the holiday season and reminds the community of the importance of accessible healthcare for all.

Supporting a Mission That Matters

Proceeds from the race support Westside Family Healthcare’s mission to provide affordable, compassionate care to families across Delaware. This year’s goal was $25,000, and by the end of the race the team announced they were just $1,000 short, and hoped to reach their goal by Monday morning.
Founded in 1988, Westside Family Healthcare is a nonprofit community health center dedicated to providing equal access to quality care regardless of a person’s ability to pay. With multiple locations across Delaware, the organization offers primary medical, dental, prenatal, and behavioral health services to more than 28,000 patients each year. Their mission centers on treating the whole person with compassion, respect, and cultural understanding, ensuring every family has the opportunity to live a healthier life.

Celebration at the Finish Line

As the final runners crossed the finish line, the crowd gathered for refreshments, photos, and laughter. Music played, medals clinked, and children in the free youth 5K proudly displayed their participation ribbons. The first 175 registrants also took home commemorative long-sleeve shirts, a favorite keepsake among repeat racers.
