  • Salesianum advances to DIAA football semifinal

    WILMINGTON – B.J. Alleyne was not going to let something like the Smyrna defense stop him. The Salesianum senior running back, who had already scored four times against the Eagles in their DIAA Class 3A football quarterfinal, lined up in the shotgun on fourth and goal from the 2 with seven seconds showing on the clock. Alleyne took the snap from center, ran behind the right side of his line and snuck the ball over the goal line, giving the top-seeded Sals a 41-40 lead over the defending champion and No. 8 seed Eagles. Smyrna tried multiple laterals on the kickoff, but one went forward, so the play – and the game – was over. The top-seeded Sals will host a semifinal next Friday or Saturday against the fifth seed, Middletown. The Cavaliers advanced with a win Saturday against No. 4 Hodgson. The Sals defeated Middletown during the regular season. The game turned into an entertaining shootout, a back-and-forth affair that thrilled the crowd. Smyrna took the opening kickoff and marched down, getting a 5-yard run from Kahmaj Kearney. Sals quarterback Brady McBride threw a screen pass to Alleyne on their first play from scrimmage, gaining 35 yards to the Eagles’ 20. McBride threw his next two passes to Ben Anton, the second of which went for a touchdown and a 7-6 lead. They increased the lead to 14-6 late in the first quarter on Alleyne’s first score, a 33-yard burst down the right side. Smyrna answered with a plethora of offensive options, carving through the Salesianum defense  to take the lead. The Eagles opened up their bag of tricks, running a double-reverse flea-flicker, ending when Tiberi hit a wide-open Kearney for a 43-yard score with 7:59 left in the half.  An interception gave the Eagles possession at the Sals’ 29, and it took four plays before Chrystian Carroll ran it in from 11. Both two-point conversions were good, and the lead was 22-14. The first-half scoring was far from over. Alleyne had all five carries in a 40-yard drive for the Sals immediately after the Eagles scored, including a 16-yard score. Smyrna finished it up, getting a touchdown run from #26 with 38 seconds left in the half. Salesianum took the opening kickoff after halftime and promptly tied the game on an Alleyne score. That began the seesaw. A Sals fumble later in the third gave the Eagles the ball at their own 37, and Tiberi passed them down into the red zone. Finally, he found Henriquez open for the go-ahead touchdown. Smyrna missed the two-point conversion, and their lead was 34-28. A long Smyrna drive ended with a punt, giving the Sals possession at their own 24 with 7:46 to go. They kept it on the ground, primarily with Alleyne but with Jasir Gaymon and Lego also contributing. McBride added a 28-yard run. Alleyne finished with a one-yard run. There was 4:04 left. The Eagles didn’t need nearly that much time to answer. From their 30, Tiberi rolled left on first down, then tossed the ball to Andre Ashley as two Sals defenders closed in. Ashley scampered untouched down the sideline to restore the Eagles’ lead with 3:44 to go. Again, however, the conversion was no good, and the lead was just five. Facing a fourth and 11, with the season on the line, McBride scrambled for 18 yards to the Eagles’ 42. Alleyne then ran to the 18, and McBride carried to the 9. The Sals had a first and goal at the 4, but two runs and a penalty gave them a third and goal at the 7. McBride threw to Hunter Balint, who managed to get out of bounds at the 2 with 7 seconds to go. Everyone knew what was coming. Alleyne took a direct snap and ran behind right tackle, barely breaking the plane of the goal. The Sals had the win. Alleyne finished with 200 yards rushing as Salesianum improved to 10-1. Smyrna finished 4-7.

  • Federal lawsuit attempts to halt, slow all East Coast wind farm approvals

    Wind farm opponents hope a Massachusetts lawsuit will halt offshore farms. Photo by Expect Best/Pexels   If a new anti-wind farm coalition is successful with a federal lawsuit to halt an offshore wind farm in Massachusetts,  the court decision could force federal regulators to reanalyze projects across the eastern seaboard, including one off the Delmarva coast. That could halt or significantly slow their construction and start-up. “It’s going to affect all of the offshore wind projects,” said Dave Stevenson, director of the Center for Energy & Environment at the Caesar Rodney Institute, a conservative think tank in Delaware. “This is the first industrial-sized offshore wind project to be approved and the environmental impact statement is seriously flawed, the record of decision they used to get the permit is seriously flawed, and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management used those flawed documents to approve this project.” Wednesday’s press conference to announce the lawsuit aimed at the Vineyard Wind turbine farm off Nantucket, also served to launch the alliance of advocacy groups — including one from Delaware —who oppose development of similar wind farms along the east coast.  The American Coalition for Ocean Protection includes groups from Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Virginia and North Carolina, as well as a group in Michigan.  The Caesar Rodney Institute is an organizing force behind the coalition, Stevenson said. It hopes members will serve as “watchdogs against misguided federal and state offshore wind policy,” according to a press release. The coalition says wind projects, including the proposed Skipjack wind farm off the shores of Ocean City, Maryland, are moving forward without adequate studies of potential impacts on the beach, environment, fishing economies and critical animal species. It says the federal government has rushed offshore wind projects through the regulatory process without consideration for the detrimental impacts of wind farms on the environment and economy.  “President Biden is publicly pushing his administration to ‘cut the red tape’ to get going on constructing these offshore wind projects without any thought to the potentially destructive consequences these wind turbines may cause or have proven to have caused in Europe,” the coalition’s website says. When Trump was president, additional environmental reviews were added for existing projects, delaying development of wind farms authorized during the Obama presidency. Trump’s 2020 executive order to ban offshore oil drilling in several states also halted the issuance of new offshore wind leases.  During Biden’s first week in office, he issued an executive order to fast track the approval process for offshore wind leases and environmental impact studies with the goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2030.  Administration officials said that would create 77,000 jobs, power 10 million homes and cut 78 million metric tons in carbon emissions. The Vineyard federal lawsuit is predicated on the migration patterns of the endangered North Atlantic right whale, which the coalition says will suffer under the effects of the wind farm’s construction and operation. That area, the group said, is one of the whale’s last strongholds, for migration, foraging and raising their young. Increased construction vessel traffic, pile driving and operational noise will further endanger the whale, the group said. Dr. Jeremy Firestone, professor and director of the Center for Research in Wind at the University of Delaware, said that in litigation, parties must use whatever is available, but that the group is disingenuous in saying their objections to the offshore wind farms are based on the right whale’s migration patterns.  “Vineyard Wind did negotiate with several conservation organizations about procedures for installation. There are expert entities like the New England Aquarium who have many, many right whale biologists on their staff,” Firestone said. “The biggest threat to right whales is and remains commercial ship strikes. I don’t see Caesar Rodney trying to shut down maritime commerce, and secondly, ghost fish lines. I don’t see them trying to shut down commercial fishing.” The lawsuit seeks an injunction against the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Marine Fisheries Service. Secretary of Interior Deb Haaland and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo are also named as defendants.  The suit seeks to stop the three federal groups from issuing any permit, approval or other action within the Vineyard Wind area or anywhere that could adversely affect federally listed species or the human or natural environment. Stevenson said that if the Vineyard Wind project’s approval isn’t overturned by the lawsuit, “they’re going to use the same flawed logic to approve every other project along the east coast, including Skipjack.” Firestone said he does not expect the plaintiffs to prevail.  “That would be very surprising if they were able to obtain that kind of relief, let alone whether they’ll be successful relating to the Vineyard Winds,” Firestone said.  Firestone said the health- and climate- related consequences of continued reliance on non-renewable energy sources far outweigh objections to the development of wind farms.  “Climate impacts of inaction are grave no matter where you live, certainly along the sea,” Firestone said. “Coastal residents live in one of the areas that are particularly at risk from a changing climate.” Firestone also warned that continued reliance on resources like coal and natural gas come with public health concerns, specifically within disenfranchised communities.  “People who are in more marginalized communities tend to be the ones that are closest to fossil fuel burning power plants and if those produce less of our energy that will be good for them,” Firestone said.  The Skipjack project near Ocean City, developed by Danish multinational power company Ørsted, is expected to generate 120 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 40,000 homes. It will use 10 853-foot- tall turbines. That project faced delays after plans to construct an interconnection facility at Fenwick Island State Park were scrapped in 2020.  Despite the delays, the company has submitted a proposal to the Maryland Public Service Commission to develop and build a second farm nearly six times the size of Skipjack 1.  Ørsted said the […]

  • Ruh-roh: Bill filed to fine barking dogs in Delaware

    Image: Getty Images Pro Delaware dog owners could soon be slapped with barking tickets if their pups don’t shut up. A bill filed in the House of Representatives would ban dogs from terrierizing communities by barking, whining or howling for a period of 15 minutes — or intermittently for 30 minutes or more. The bill is set to be considered by the House Health and Human Development Committee Wednesday.  If pawssed, dogs will be exempt if they’re teased or provoked, or if someone trespasses or threatens to trespass onto private property where the dog is located. For a first violation, dog owners would receive a civil penalty of $100. Second violations would cost $200. Third violations are the ruffest of all, coming in at $300.  Town Square LIVE hounded the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Eric Morrison, D-Glasgow, but attempts to fetch him for comment were unsuccessful.  One of the bill’s cosponsors, Rep. Ruth Briggs King, R-Georgetown, pawstulated that the legislation would give neighbors some recourse if a nearby pug were to become a nuisance.  She said she agreed to co-sponsor the bill because several constituents in Georgetown and Long Neck complained about neighbors leaving their dogs outside at all hours of the day.  “You’re lucky if the police will respond to this,” Briggs King said. “I’m not talking about a dog that barks every once in a while. I’m talking about dogs — when people are trying to go to bed at 11 or 11:30 — and it just barks and barks and barks and barks and barks.” When law enforcement does respond, she said, there’s not much they can do under current statute.  “This is worthy of discussion,” Briggs King said. “People need to talk about what would a reasonable solution to give people the quiet enjoyment to be able to sleep at night, so that’s why I signed on.” She said law enforcement would respond if residents were disrupting neighbors by throwing wild parties every night, so they ought to be able to do the same for nuisance barking.  As to whether the bill stands a chance, Briggs King said she’s not sure if her colleagues will bite.  “I think it’s causing a group discussion, which is what you want, because maybe then the parties will come together and find a solution,” she concluded. In essence, Briggs King decided that signing on to the bill is the leashed she could do to address her constituents’ concerns.

  • Redding plan could remove Christina, Colonial schools from Wilmington
    Redding's interim redistricting plan would shuffle schools and students in four districts in north New Castle County.

    Some students residing in the city of Wilmington who attend Christina and Colonial school district schools would be transferred mostly to Red Clay and a few to Brandywine, if a redistricting plan championed by the Redding Consortium comes to fruition.  The move would essentially remove Christina and Colonial from the city. “We believe this is a big first step,” said Rep. Nnamdi Chukwuocha, D-Wilmington, and a member of the Redding Consortium. “Our biggest challenges that we have…We created these high-need, high-poverty schools that are racially-identifiable, so we have a magnitude of needs within our schools.” The interim plan posted front and center on Redding’s website has not been officially voted on. It is being considered by the consortium and was proposed by Chukwuocha and Councilman Jea Street. The Redding Consortium is continuing its process of developing a plan, and the proposed interim plan could be significantly changed before making its way to the State Board of Education. Splitting the city schools up into different districts occurred in the aftermath of desegregation in the 1970s. The Redding Consortium for Educational Equity, created in 2019, recommends policies and practices to the governor and legislators to improve education equity and outcomes in the city of Wilmington and Northern New Castle County. The consortium defines educational equity as something that “requires safe, secure and student-focused learning environments where every student is intentionally provided access to the support, resources, and opportunities they need to reach their full academic and social potential, in and out of the classroom.” A final redistricting plan will be presented to the State Board of Education no later than October  2025.  Until then, the plan will be adjusted with feedback from the state board, public hearings and stakeholders like those directly impacted by the redistricting like school boards, the teacher’s union, parents and parent organizations, local elected officials and more. The report will contain boundary shifts, immediate support for city schools, a timeline and engagement process to develop a final redistricting plan, and ideas to address systemic and systematic change for Wilmington students. It is not expected to affect the Wilmington Learning Collaborative. “In order to begin to concentrate and focus our efforts on the needs of our students in our schools, we believe that having one or two district partners to to support our city will be better,” Chukwuocha said, “and then we can greater align in having a true urban education model that meets the needs of these students.” He said that includes before-school and after-school programming, intense reading and math supports inside of the school’s and parent councils where parents are involved and given a role to play in their students’ education. “And the biggest thing, I really believe that, is again having the city of Wilmington itself be an investor partner in this process,” he said, noting that the city lost its school district in the late 1970s. The consortium is pursuing the development of a non-binding interim plan to be presented to the State Board of Education and other stakeholders for feedback beginning within the next three months and continuing over the next six to 12 months, according to Senate Majority Whip Elizabeth “Tizzy” Lockman, D-Wilmington, who is vice-chair of the group. Eventually, a final plan could be sent to the General Assembly and governor for approval, she said, which  would create a binding path forward. Any timeline for implementation would be determined within that final plan, which is expected to be about three to five years after adaptation.  Proposed Changes to Christina School District Boundaries: The current Christina School District boundaries in the city of Wilmington will no longer exist. Schools: The Bayard School, Maurice Pritchett, Sr. Academy, Stubbs Early Education Center, and Pulaski Early Education Center would transfer to the Red Clay Consolidated School District. Students: Students currently living within Christina in the city boundaries will either attend Red Clay Consolidated or Brandywine School districts.  These changes would account for around 4,400 fewer students enrolled in Christina.  Proposed Changes to the Colonial School District Boundaries: The current Colonial School District boundary that extends into the city of Wilmington will move and start at the borders of the city. Schools: There are no traditional public schools within Colonial in the city boundaries. Students: Students currently living within Colonial within the city boundaries will attend Brandywine or Red Clay Consolidated consistent with the changes described above.  These changes would account for around 300 fewer students enrolled in Colonial.  Proposed Changes to Brandywine School District  Boundaries: The current Brandywine boundaries in the city of Wilmington would expand to include students residing north and east of the Brandywine Creek, which are currently portions of Christina and Colonial. Schools: Brandywine would receive no new schools and will keep P.S. duPont Middle School and Harlan Elementary School. Students: These changes would account for an increased tax base of around 330 students enrolled in the Brandywine. About 125 of these students currently attend their feeder school and the remaining choice outside of their current school district.  Proposed Changes to Red Clay Consolidated School District Boundaries: The current Red Clay boundaries in the city of Wilmington would expand to include students residing in the city south and west of the Brandywine Creek, which are currently portions of Christina and Colonial. Schools: Red Clay would receive all Christina schools in the city of Wilmington: The Bayard School, Maurice Pritchett, Sr. Academy, Stubbs Early Education Center, and Pulaski Early Education Center.  Red Clay would keep Lewis Elementary School, Joseph E. Johnson, Jr. Elementary School, Shortlidge Academy, and Warner Elementary School. Students: The changes would account for an increased tax base of around 4,400 enrolled in Red Clay.   • Milford barber celebrates hiking Appalachian Trail

    Shoes bugged Norman Smith of Milford on his four-month hike of the Appalachian Trail. “Some wore out, some hurt my feet, but overall, it was a challenge to find the right footwear,” Smith said. “Shoes I liked didn’t last very long and shoes that promised to be more durable hurt my feet.” He lost weight. “You just can’t carry enough food,” he said. “I lost over 20 pounds, returning home very thin for a man who is 6’2” at 151 pounds.” And the weather in New England as he ended the Georgia-to-Maine trek did not cooperate. “The hiking gets harder as you head north,” he said. “This was compounded this year with nearly non-stop rain. My feet were wet from Vermont to Baxter State Park in Maine. Days were cut short due to storms and other days were just miserable because of the rain and mud.” But he didn’t quit and as soon as the Milford barber ended the 2,190-mile trail, he took a vacation with his wife, Megan, and their four children. His Norman’s Deluxe Barbershop and Shave Parlor will reopen in September. Smith can’t remember when he decided that hiking the trail sounded cool. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy claims the trail is the longest hiking-only trail in the world. More than three million people hike segments of the trail each year. Appalachian Trail goal “It’s always been one of those ‘I’d like to do that someday’ kind of things,” Smith said. “Back in November, I went on a solo hike on a section of the trail in Pennsylvania where I hurt my legs hiking too fast. I began to worry that my legs might be starting to go bad and if I did not do this soon, I may never be able to do it.” Born and raised in Milford, Smith worked at Baltimore Air Coil for 20 years before going to barber school and opening his own shop six years ago. “I started the trail at Amicoloia Falls State Park in Georgia,” Smith said. “There is an 8-mile approach trail from there to Springer Mountain, the southern terminus of the AT.” Four months later, he completed the trail at its northern terminus on Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park in Maine. Prior to tackling the trail, he had never hiked more than two nights and three days with an average range of 30 miles. Smith began hiking about 18 years ago on a family vacation In Acadia National Park in Maine. He only did day hikes up until about three years ago when he and his family began backpacking. The epic views were a highlight along the trail, he said. “But, for, me it was the people I got to meet and spend time with along the way,” he said. ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: ‘American Idol’ to seek singers from Delaware If he hiked the trail again, there are things Smith would do differently. “I did this hike fast. My goal was 120 days,” he said. “That’s about four months to accomplish something that most people take five to six months to do.” He’s happy he hiked it like he did. “That being said, if I did it again, I would want to do it with my wife and take a full six months to do it,” he said. “It’s a different kind of hike. My hike was more of an athletic endeavor. If I ever do it again, it would be to really enjoy the trail and the hiking culture.” Smith thanked Megan for backing his goal. “Without her love and support, I could never have made this journey,” Smith said. “She stayed home, worked a full time job, took care of the kids, went to school and still had enough in the tank for me when I needed moral support. I just can’t thank her enough.”
