People on Facebook are mourning what they say is the upcoming closure of Ronny’s Garden World, a fixture since 1970 on the du Pont Parkway in Smyrna, first for produce, then plants and gardening supplies and its massive Christmas Wonderland.
Ronny’s website doesn’t say anything about a closure, and a call for comment was not returned. However, Joanna Marie Holt said on Facebook that she called and confirmed it. John Humphrey said he also confirmed it, too.
“For those of you that don’t know, Ronny’s Garden World in Smyrna will be closing its doors for good at 3 p.m. on the 31st,” William Wrinn wrote in Facebook’s What’s Going There Delaware group. “The owner passed away in August, and so the daughters of the owner thought it would be time to retire.”
“The day after Christmas, everything in stock will be 50% off,” Becca Snow wrote in Facebook’s First State Families group.
Founder Ronald L. Burris died in August.
“I am so sorry the hear the sad news,” Rehoboth Beach resident Sally Orth wrote “Ronny’s was part of my life. All my landscaping and spring, summer and fall flowers were bought there.”
“Another landmark gone,” Dover resident Peggy Scarbro wrote. “So sad. Thank you Ronny’s and staff for all the wonderful years we did have. Y’all will be missed.
“We bring the kids there every year … for 20 +years!” Heather Duffy wrote. “We each pick out an ornament from their amazing Christmas tree garden, which never disappoints. They do cider or hot cocoa and warm roasted chestnuts.”
“Ronny and Glenda Burris opened up shop as a simple produce market,” according to the store’s history. It soon expanded to flowers, shrubs and gardening supplies, going from Ronny’s Market to Ronny’s Garden World.
“By the late 1980s, our daughters, Brenda [Metts] and Donna [Staley], returned to join in the family business.”
On Facebook, fans speculated on the future of the site, just south of the Smyrna Rest Area.
