Both the percentage of people testing positive for COVID-19 and the number of cases continue to skyrocket in Delaware.

State health officials continue to plead with people to stay home to avoid exposure, and the state has organized more than 30 pop-up and drive-thru testing sites the week of Dec. 13.

“We need the public to take this virus and this current surge in cases seriously,” said Dr. Karyl Rattay, director of the Division of Public Health, in a press release. “Now is not the time to visit with friends or to continue traditions like family cookie bakes unless you can do so virtually. This is the time to double down on mask use, frequent handwashing and keeping your distance from others who reside outside your household.”

The state is urging people who intend to gather with anyone except the people with whom they are living to be tested before getting together, not after.

The numbers are shocking. The seven-day average of new cases per day was 769 as of Thursday. The state reported another 1001 cases Monday with 373 people hospitalized, 50 of them in critical condition..

The state and health officials are most worried about hospitalizations, because they tend to rise a week or two after the number of positive cases do. State officials have said the state has about 450 beds for COVID patients, but that hospitals are managing OK for the time being. The state also has an opportunity to put additional beds at Nemours, if need be.

The number of people who tested positive has increased to 22.8 percent in the last week, as of Thursday. The seven-day average for the percentage of total tests that were positive was 9.5%.

New guidelines start Monday at 8 a.m. and include a stay at home order, 10 p.m. curfews at restaurants and bars, and restrictions on how many people can be in retail settings, among other things.

As of Friday, 807 Delawareans have died because of complications from COVID-19, the state said.
