The Saint Mark’s Spartans showed Wednesday night why they were the top seed in this year’s playoffs.
They defeated the Delaware Military Academy Seahawks in three straight by scores of 25-14, 25-10 and 25-11. The Spartans jumped out early in each set and prevented DMA from ever closing the gap.Â
The Spartans set the tone straight away, jumping out to a 7-0 lead in set one. They followed suit in each set, with set two starting at 3-0 but rising quickly to 7-2. In the third set the Spartans scored the five points, then built an 11-4 lead over DMA.
Mya Lewis led the Spartans with 16 kills, while Julia Yurkovich added nine. Brooke Dow had 17 digs, while Sam Gerhart added 13. Katie Sonchen had 22 assists and would add four aces. Nicole Dimiris would lead St Marks defensively with six blocks. Saint Mark’s improved to 14-0 on the year.
The Spartans will now face the Padua Pandas for this year’s DIAA Volleyball state championship Saturday at Saint Mark’s at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on the  NFHS Network on the DIAA channel.Â
Before the championship game, there will be a third place match between Delaware Military Academy and Wilmington Friends. It will not be streamed.Â
