Appoquinimink's soccer team will face Salesianum
Appoquinimink and Salesianum will face each other Saturday for the state soccer championship.

On a bitterly cold night in Middletown, the No. 1 Appoquinimink Jaguars faced No. #5 seed St Georges Hawks in a semi-final matchup for the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I Boys soccer.

The two teams faced off during the regular season with Jaguars defeating the Hawks 1-0. The second time around wouldn’t be any better for the St Georges Hawks.

Appoquinimink came out and took control of the game right away. They controlled the ball for most of the first. Colby Niggebrugge headed the corner kick toward the goal where his teammate Keegan Miller kicked the ball into the back of the net, giving the Jaguars a 1-0 lead. That score would hold until the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter the momentum changed. St Georges defense stepped up their intensity, breaking up almost every attempt by the Jaguars. That defense turned into offense. The Hawks attempto dump the ball into Appoquinimink’s zone ended with a Jaguars defender called for a handball.

That penalty gave St Georges a free kick from 27 yards away. Three players lined up behind the ball and faked two shots before Rudy Martinez finally deposited the ball for a goal, just passing the outreached hands of Jaguars goalie Andrew Lancour. The first half ended with the score tied at 1.

The second half was all Appoquinimink as they netted two goals in the third quarter. The Jaguars got their first when Aidan McDade took a shot from the right side of the goal. St Georges’ goalie blocked the initial shot but it was deflected off a teammate and into the goal, giving Appoquinimink a 2-1 lead.

The second goal of the quarter came off off a great assist by Hindovei Tucker as he led Cody Niggebrugge ahead of a couple Hawks defenders only for Niggebrugge to stop on a dime, let the defenders blow by him and take the shot, putting the ball in the back of the net.

That became the last goal of the game as Appoquinimink defeated St Georges 3-1.

Appoquinimink will move on to face No. 2 Salesianum at Dover High Saturday, Dec. 12, at 1 p.m. for the DIAA Division I championship.

The Jaguars defeated the Sals earlier in the regular season by 3-0.

However, Appoquinimink has fallen to Salesianum the last four times these teams have faced off in the championship game.

This game will be live on the NFHS Network powered by Delaware Live/302Sports. Tune in to see this matchup behind two of Delaware’s perennially great soccer teams.
