New Castle County is turning two traditional holiday events — the open house at Rockwood Park and Glasgow Park’s Holiday Celebration — into fee drive-thru light shows in both parks, the county announced Friday.
“Pandemic or not, the show must go on,” said Matt Meyer, county executive. “We’re excited for the community to help us usher in the holiday season by joining us at our beautifully decorated parks in a COVID-19 safe celebration. We can’t wait to see you.”
The drives will be free.
New Castle County’s Merry & Bright Holiday Lights will ask families to stay in their cars while driving through the decorated parks. Along they way, they’ll get to wave to Santa. There will be no photos with Santa this year.
The lights and special events will go on over two consecutive weekends: At Rockwood Park on Dec. 4, 5 and 6 and at Glasgow Regional Park, Dec. 11 and 12. The events run from 6-9 p.m. each night. Holiday Lights will remain on in the evening at both locations through the end of December for drive-thru viewing.
“It has been quite a year,” says Jane Rattenni, manager of the Division of Community Resources, which handles large community events. “From the outset we wanted to make sure we would still bring holiday cheer to families in New Castle County while keeping everyone safe.”
