Kimberly Stock, an English and English learner teacher at McKean High School, was named Delaware’s 2021 Teacher of the Year.

Stock accepted her award with a teary, animated speech telling her students that they should be able to see themselves in their work and in the halls around them.

Stock was chosen from a field of 20 teachers nominated by their school districts or charter schools. She represented Red Clay Consolidated School District. Now, she will be Delaware’s nominee for National Teacher of the Year.

She’s been a teacher for 13 years, and previously worked as a middle school English teacher in Lincoln, Nebraska, a language arts tutor and writer, a GED language arts instructor for adult learners, and the manager of a community-based learning center where she helped to increase the center’s enrollment by over 100%.

“The most important job I have as a teacher,” she said in the press release announcing her as Red Clay’s teacher of the year, “is to teach my students for who they are and not who someone else thinks they are or thinks they should be.”

Stock said Tuesday night in her acceptance speech that her students asked her if the Teacher of the Year award was like the Miss America pageant.

She said it was better, because she got to keep on teaching them.

The Delaware Teacher of the Year  receives a $5,000 grant to use for the educational benefit of her students, as well as a personal grant of $3,000.  Additionally, all nominees receive a $2,000 grant from the state.
