Bridge inspections later this month will cause one-way traffic for a week on the Tyler McConnell Bridge and other lane and shoulder closures in New Castle County, according to the Delaware Department of Transportation.
During the week of Aug. 24, the Tyler McConnell – a notorious chokepoint over the Brandywine at rush hour – will have one lane closed from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Alternating one-way traffic will be controlled overnight by flaggers between the Experimental Station and Del. 100, north of Wilmington.
DelDOT said that Pennoni, the Philadelphia-based engineering firm it contracted for the inspections, also will be working on the following bridges:
• The I-95 northbound bridge over Churchmans Road near Christiana will have lane closures and lane shifts 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20:.The plan is for alternating right shoulder closures on I-95 northbound with lane shifts on Del. 1 to the I-95 northbound on-ramp beneath the Churchmans Road overpass between Exit 4 (Christiana Mall) and Exit 5A (Del. 141 south). During the bridge inspection, all on- and off-ramps will remain open. The rain date is Aug. 21.
• The I-95 bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad near Newark will have shoulder closures from 9 a.m. until noon Friday, Aug. 28. DelDOT said the plan is for alternating right and left rolling shoulder closures in both northbound and southbound directions on I-95, a half-mile north of Del. 896.
• The Fourth Street bridge over the Christina River in Wilmington will have lane closures from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27. Alternating right lane closures are planned between North Church Street and Christiana Avenue. A pedestrian detour will be in place as well.
